Splatoon 2 sells over 670 000 units at launch in Japan, over 100 000 units for the Switch (Famitsu)

Splatoon 2 was released last released last week worldwide, and is pretty much the most important release for the Nintendo Switch so far. It’s the very first truly exclusive major release for the console, not shared with another one (as opposed to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, also on Wii U, or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, an enhanced port of a Wii U game).

(Granted, ARMS is indeed an exclusive, but it’s on a much smaller scale than Splatoon, popularity-wise!).

Since it’s such a high profile release, Famitsu did release one of its early sales report (that usually only console lanches and games selling at least 1 million units at launch get). It reveals that Splatoon 2 sold over 670 000 units during the first three days… 670 955 units, to be precise. Famitsu specifies this number includes download card, and the Splatoon 2 hardware bundle.

Yes, that makes Splatoon 2 the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch, a feat accomplished in just 4 days!

As of July 23rd, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 1 205 087 units according to Famitsu, which means that 103 301 units were sold last week in Japan. This is by far the most units Nintendo has shipped since launch, which is no surprise: Splatoon 2 is indeed Nintendo’s biggest release this year, at least in Japan. It’s definitely one of the most important releases for Nintendo this generation.

It will be interesting to see how many units the company will ship during the upcoming weeks, now that the Summer holiday period has started.

In comparison, Splatoon sold “only” 155 610 units during the first four days in May 2015, with 1 512 789 Wii U in the wild. In other words, Splatoon sold almost 5 times better than its predecessor, and with less consoles in the wild. It’s definitely a great result for Nintendo, especially since Splatoon 2 is bound to sell on the long run just like the original did.

It’s hard to say exactly just how far Splatoon 2 sales will go, but there’s no doubt it will outsell its predecessor (over 1.7 million units, including digital), probably even this very year. But for the time being, sales are bound to be limited by Nintendo Switch shipments… just like pretty much all other major games on the platform.

Full sales data for this week from both Famitsu and Media Create will be available in a few hours!
