Pokémon GO coming to Apple Watch, Pokémon GO Plus releasing next week

Yesterday and this morning, several announcements were made for Pokémon GO. But first, some rather impressive data! Since launch, in July, Pokémon GO has been downloaded over 500 million times worldwide! Players have walked a total of 4.6 billion kilometers, which is pretty much the distance between the Earth and Pluto.

The first announcement is for Pokémon GO Plus, the accessory initially revealed along with the game last year (and developed by Nintendo). It will be released next week in Europe, North America, Japan, and “most countries”, on September 16th to be more precise.

To be able to use the Pokémon GO Plus accessory, you will need the following:

  • Pokémon GO (important: the accessory doesn’t work by itself)
  • a smartphone compatible with Bluetooth Smart

Here’s the system requirements for Pokémon GO Plus (more details are available on the official website):

iOS:

Compatible with iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s / SE / 6 / 6s /6 Plus / 6s Plus devices with iOS Ver. 8–9 installed.

  • Not compatible with 5th generation iPod Touch devices or iPhone 4S or earlier iPhone devices.
  • Compatibility with tablet devices is not guaranteed.
  • Compatibility is not guaranteed for all devices.

Android:

Compatible with Android devices that have 2 GB RAM or more, have Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Ver. 4.0 or higher) capability, and have Android Ver. 4.4–6.0 installed.

  • Not compatible with Android devices that use Intel Atom processors.
  • Compatibility with tablet devices is not guaranteed.
  • Application may not run on certain devices even if they have compatible OS versions installed.

Finally, it was announced yesterday (during the Apple keynote) that Pokémon GO would be coming to Apple Watch before the end of the year.

According to Niantic, this special version of the game will add a “seamless way to interact with the game through easy trackers, haptic notifications and quick taps to keep playing.” It will also have exclusive features, such as summaries of your activities (such as the number of steps, calories burned, etc.), and more.
