NPD: sales for April 2015 (United States)

Software

During April 2015, sales of games for new generation platforms (including the Wii U), grew by 200% (revenue), which was more than enough to compensate for the drop in sales for the previous generation (-62%) and handhelds (-32%). As a result, overall Software sales grew by 13% (20% for consoles only).

An analyst also said a few words about accessory sales, which have been rather “soft” in April due to Easter being in Early April this year (as opposed to April 20th in 2014). Total controller sales grew by 27%, mainly due to the new generation consoles (like the Xbox One Wireless controller, #1 of sales with +56% in April). As for video game point & subscription cards, they enjoyed the highest sales in the accessories category, despite a decline year on year.

Unfortunately, Nintendo didn’t send any Press Release to comment the NPD numbers this month, so we don’t have any data for any Wii U or Nintendo 3DS games. However, we do know from an analyst that if the Top 10 below was on a SKU basis (each version listed separately for multiplatform titles), then Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Mario Party 10 would have made the list.

01) Mortal Kombat X (PS4, Xbox One)

Hardware

In April, the drop in sales for previous generation platforms (-55%) and handhelds (–36%) is mainly responsible for the decline in hardware sales, as current generation platforms (including the Wii U) remained stable.

Unfortunately, we do not have any precise numbers this month for Nintendo hardware.

Hardware sales:

– Xbox One: ~187 000 (#1)
– Nintendo 3DS: ~116k
– Wii U: ~43k
