Nintendo: some sales data for France in 2022 (Software, Hardware)

Historically, France has always been one of Nintendo’s strongest markets in Europe, and 2022 was no exception. According to data shared by the company, the Nintendo Switch sold nearly 1 million units last year (987 000 units to be precise), which brings total sales since launch to 7.09 million units. That’s more than the Wii, which used to be the best-selling home console in the country with 6.3 million units sold, and the PlayStation 4 (6 million units sold).

The Nintendo Switch outselling the Wii is hardly a surprise, as the same happened at the worlwide level. And with the current sales trajectory, it looks like the Nintendo Switch will get to keep its record for a while.

Last year, half of all consoles sold in France were Nintendo Switch consoles, and 1/4 of all households (10.5% of the population) now own at least one Nintendo Switch. In 2022, new buyers were mostly families (with kids) and young adults.

As for games, Nintendo Switch Sports was heavily advertised in stores and on TV, which really paid off for Nintendo: over 425 000 units were sold at retail alone. It was their 4th best-selling game in 2022 after Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (701 000 units sold), Pokémon Legends: Arceus (575 000 units sold), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (445 000 units sold).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seems unstoppable: despite over half of all Nintendo Switch owners already owning, it just keeps on selling.

As for Pokémon, 2022 was a record year for the series in France with three different games in the 3 in the Top 10 Software (a record for any series). Pokémon Legends: Arceus on its own managed to outsell the PlayStation 4 version of the almighty FIFA.
