Nintendo Gallery: Nintendo to turn its historical Uji Ogura Plant into a museum

Built over 50 years ago, back in 1969, the Uji Ogura Plant (previously known as the “Uji Plant”) is Nintendo’s historical plant. It was used to manufacture playing cards and Hanafuda cards, and also served as a customer service center for product repairs. Over the years, it’s been progressively sidelined in favour of the new Uji Plant, up until November 2016 when remaining operations were finally transferred to that plant.

When that happened, Nintendo began discussions to decide what to do with the Uji Ogura Plant, and it was ultimately decided that the plant itself and the land surrounding the building would be used as a gallery to showcase the many products Nintendo has launched over its history.

That’s the Nintendo Gallery (tentative name), set to open during the 2023 Fiscal Year (by March 31st 2024), which will allow visitors to discover Nintendo’s product development history and philosophy. But before the Nintendo Gallery can open, Nintendo will first need to renovate the build to accomodate it.

Here’s what the Nintendo Gallery is expected to look like:

Nintendo took the decision to turn its former plant into a museum while taking into considering the City of Uji’s plan to redevelop the nearby Ogura Station area.
