Nintendo France: latest sales data (Mario movie and games, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Switch, more)

In an interview with Le Figaro, Philippe Lavoué (President of Nintendo France) shared some juicy sales data for the Nintendo Switch and its games in France in 2023.

First up, the Super Mario Bros. Movie. It was a resounding success with no less than 7.3 million tickets sold. That movie had a noticeable impact on the sales of Mario games, which topped 2.7 million units combined in 2023. That number includes 383.500 units for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, 153.000 units for Mario Party Superstars, and 132.500 units for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

As for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s off to a fantastic start with no less than 740.000 units sold at retail alone. That’s no less than the best launch ever for a Mario game in France.

Needless to say, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom made some waves when it was released with 500.000 units sold during its launch week-end (biggest launch ever for Nintendo France). It ended up selling 968.000 units in 2023, and that’s only at retail (with digital sales, the game has already sold well over 1 million units).

Finally, the Nintendo Switch ended up selling 855.000 additional units in 2023. That’s not as much as in 2022 (987.000 units sold), but such a drop is hardly a surprise for a console that’s nearing its 8th year on the market.
