Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo to stop repairs for Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS models

Last year, Nintendo announced the end of Wii U repairs due to a lack of components. It wasn’t the first time the company made such an announcement, and it certainly won’t be the last. In fact, Nintendo made another one today! This time, it’s repairs for the Nintendo 2DS and the New Nintendo 3DS that are scheduled to end in the (near) future in Japan.

According to the announcement, Nintendo will soon stop accepting repair requests for the following Nintendo 3DS models in Japan:

• Nintendo 2DS [FTR-001] (the New Nintendo 2DS line is not impacted)
• New Nintendo 3DS [KTR-001]
• New Nintendo 3DS XL (called LL in Japan) [RED-001]

NB: all colours and editions are impacted.

As for when Nintendo will stop repairs for those models, it will depend on when the company runs out of components. That means that not all repairs will end at the same time: some models and/or elements (such as the screen of the Nintendo 2DS for example) may become unavailable sooner than others. Nintendo will notify users of the status of repairs on the product page of each console, on their Support website.

Today’s announcement was expected, as all Nintendo 3DS models were discontinued several years ago and parts were bound to become scarce (especially as Nintendo will only hold on the necessary parts for a certain amount of time, as per their own regulations). It only applies to Japan, but other regions should also be impacted.

Of course, the announcement only applies to “official” repairs via Nintendo’s Customer Service. You will still have the option to bring your Nintendo 2DS and/or New Nintendo 3DS (XL) to a third-party repair service, or even to repair it yourself using aftermarket parts.
