Media Create: some comments about Week 19 in Japan (Golden Week)

During Week 19, a total of over 392 000 games were sold in Japan. The drop compared to last week is quite noticeable: sales were only 52.12% of Week 18, mainly due to the drop in sales for popular titles released during that week. What’s more, sales during Week 19 were only 89.17% of the same week, last year.

Media Create reveals that total Software sales for the Golden Week (April 27th / May 10th) reached 1 144 000 units, which is 113.61% of the same period, last year (where total Software sales reached 1 007 000 units).

Here’s the breakdown for Nintendo and Sony platforms:

– Sony: sales were 92.92% of last year, during the same period;
– Nintendo: sales were 125.97% of last year, during the same period.

Unfortunately, sales during the 2015 Golden Week may have been better than in 2014, they’re actually worse than in 2013 and 2012. They amount for 66.46% of the Golden Week in 2013 (from April 22th to May 5th) and 61.01% of the Golden Week in 2012 (from April 23th to May 6th).

As for Hardware, sales were also down during Week 19. During that week, a total of 76 000 consoles were sold, which is 82.86% of last week. For the full Golden Week, total Hardware sales reached 167 000 units, which is 94.80% of the same period in 2014.

Here’s the breakdown for handhelds / home consoles:

– Handhelds: sales were 71.81% of last year, during the same period;
– Home consoles: sales were 148.10% of last year, during the same period.

Since home consoles are (much) more expensive than handhelds, the total amount of hardware sales on a monetary basis increased to 108.37% of last year.
