Media Create: Q1 2016 Sales for Japan (Top 96, Publishers Top 10, more)

Notice: the data in this post was compiled by horuhe from NeoGAF, who kindly allowed us to post it here. It’s taken from Media Create’s weekly Top 20 charts. In other words, the data below is incomplete, and is only meant to give you an idea of how well recent releases sold in Japan. Please keep that in mind when reading this post.

Top 10 Publishers

During Q1 2016, Square-Enix was the best publisher in Japan, thanks to Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 and Dragon Quest Builders. But as mentioned just above, the numbers are only based on Media Create’s Top 20 and are therefore not complete.

With Nintendo, sales remain steady on long periods, which is why some games sometime disappear for months, and then reppear one week with 100 000 additional sales. And if you have that with several games, it quickly adds up. But the number below isn’t too surprising, since Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics is one of the the only noteworthy releases of Q1 2016 in Japan.

Level-5 is also holding well, thanks to the continued sales of Yo-kai Watch Busters and the good start of Yo-kai Sangokushi. When Yo-kai Watch 3 is released, the company will rise to the top 3 places.

Top 5 Nintendo 3DS

The Top 5 for the Nintendo 3DS isn’t too surprising. The top 2 spots are held by two popular releases which came out during Q1 2016. We can also see that Monster Hunter X / Generations has been enjoying rather steady sales, and that Shin Megami Tensei IV Final’s sales quickly slowed down after launch.

Top 5 Wii U

The Top 5 for Wii U shows just how popular Splatoon is in Japan (and just how unpopular Wii U games are in general). Pokkén Tournament only landed at #2 due to a rather slow start (but sales have been steady). As for Super Mario Maker, it’s clearly suffering from Wii U shortages, as its sales are tied to Hardware sales (because of the Super Mario Maker Premium Set).

Top 96 Software

Q1 is not the best month for video games sales (especially January and February), and the Top 96 below is proof of that. The best-selling entry didn’t even sell over 500 000 units, and the second best-selling title didn’t even reach 300 000 units sold (it was a multiplatform title, though).
