Mario Kart Tour to stop getting new content this October
Mario Kart Tour was launched back in September 2019, and unlike the ill-fated Miitomo and Dr. Mario World, it’s still alive and kicking with new courses, racers, and other items being added on a regular basis.
However, it looks like the end is drawing near for the mobile racing game, as Nintendo has just announced that it will stop getting new content this October. Starting from the Battle Tour (which starts on October 4th), Mario Kart Tour will no longer get any of the following:
- new courses
- new drivers
- new karts
- new gliders
In other words, the “new” Tours will only feature returning contents from previous Tours. It’s not clear whether new modes and other content (such as Mii Driver Suits) will still be added in the future.
It’s not quite the end for Mario Kart Tour: “new” Tours will still go live every odd week (same as usual), and the full game remains playable. But as a rule of thumb, when a mobile game stops getting new content, it’s a sure sign that the developers/publisher are planning to shut it down in the future (generally within the year).
However, Nintendo has not made an announcement regarding end of service for Mario Kart Tour, which means the game still has a fair amount of fuel left in the tank.
Today’s announcement comes as the game is about to celebrate its 4th Anniversary, and with the final Wave of the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe drawing near (it will be released by the end of the year).
Considering the courses from the Booster Course Pass come from Mario Kart Tour, it’s perhaps not too surprising that Nintendo has announced it will not get any new content in the future. Now, there’s a little doubt that a new Mario Kart game is in the works for the Nintendo Switch and/or its successor, and so it’s possible that Mario Kart Tour will eventually get content from that game (or maybe a new Mario Kart game for smart devices will be launched to replaced Mario Kart Tour).
