Japan: Tsutaya / Geo sales for 2016

Tsutaya

Today, Tsutaya shared their Top 20 Software for 2016, along with some comments for the full year (January 1st – December 14th).

They note that sales in 2016 were solid (compared to 2015), with one exception: the Wii U, which doesn’t have a single game in the Top 20 below. The Nintendo 3DS (the “standard” handheld for kids) did pretty much as well as last year, with 10 titles in the Top 20 (as opposed to 11 titles in 2015). That being said, the absence of a title like Monster Hunter Generations didn’t go unnoticed.

According to Tsutaya, the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer was pretty popular, and was incredibly successful in attracting a lot of “dormant users” (aka people who have not bought a game console in a while, and are therefore not regular players… at least, not on dedicated gaming machines). They believe that it’s pretty good news for the Nintendo Switch, to be launched in March 2017.
