[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 33, 2020 (August 10 – August 16) [Top 30]
Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 33, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!
Famitsu (Week 33)
As expected, Week 33 was a pretty big week for Nintendo Switch games, due to Obon. All evergreen titles saw a healthy bump in sales, with two major exceptions:
- 01./01. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) – 105.983 / 5.551.198 (-2%). Sales are slightly down due to Nintendo shipping more consoles during the pre-Obon week. Since sales of this game are still heavily tied to Hardware sales (and more precisely those of the bundle), it’s no wonder they are very slightly down. That being said, they remain unusually strong for a game that release 5 months ago;
- 02./02. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 26.320 / 1.335.744 (-61%). Big drop this week, once again due to shortages.
While not an evergreen title (yet), Paper Mario: The Origami King saw a boost in sales due to Obon (20 978 units sold, +10%), with 222 575 units sold at retail since launch. Next few weeks will tell us what to expect for long-term sales. As for eBaseball Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2020, it also saw a modest increase in sales (16 444 units sold, +6%), which brings total sales to 190 925 units on Nintendo Switch alone.

As expected, Nintendo did ship a lot of Nintendo Switch consoles for Obon, though slightly less than during the pre-Obon week. A little under 150 000 units (148 699 units to be precise) were sold during Week 33, down from 173 338 units during Week 32. But despite that (rather minor) drop, sales are still at a much higher level than usual, with 3 times as many units sold in 2020 than in 2019 (only 50 714 units for Week 33 2019)!
And if you want to get a good idea of just how strong Nintendo Switch sales have been this year, here’s YTD sales for 2017 and 2018:
- 2017 YTD: 3 312 619 units
- 2018 YTD: 3 534 165 units
That’s right: August isn’t over yet, but the Nintendo Switch has already sold more units in 2020 than in 2017 (March to December), and came pretty close to do the same with 2018 sales. In 2019, the console ended up selling 4 493 885 units, and unless something happens during the 4 remaining months of the year, it should easily blow past that record.
There’s little doubt that 2020 will end up as the peak year for the Nintendo Switch. It’s not clear just how high sales will go, but with already 3.5 million units sold several months before the start the holiday season, +5 million units is the bare minimum to expect for YTD sales by the end of the year.
The gap between 2020 and 2019 sales just keeps on widening, with 3 463 081 units sold as of Week 33 2020, and “only” 1 832 759 units sold as of Week 33 2019. Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has already sold 14 846 512 units, with 2 507 237 units for the Lite model and 12 339 275 units for the OG model. Depending on how big the drop for Week 34 and 35, the Nintendo Switch may well hit the 15 million units milestone before the end of the month.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it did see a modest bump in sales with 1 173 units sold (vs. 834 units the previous week, and 5 544 units during the same week last year), bringing YTD sales to 39 802 units (vs. 154 001 units as of Week 33 2019), and LTD sales to 24 535 949 units.
