[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 30, 2021 (July 19 – July 25) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 30, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 30)

Despite two public holidays and a 4-day week-end for many people, Week 30 was a rather quiet week for the video games market in Japan. Not a single entry in the Top 10 Software, despite quite a few games releasing.

As such, it’s no wonder that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is still #1 of sales despite a (fairly standard) drop in sales. It sold 42 642 units during its second week (-73% compared to launch week), which brings total sales to 201 731 units. It should have no trouble selling over 300 000 units at retail alone within the next couple of months.

Unfortunately, Crayon Shin-chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi was virtually sold out during its second week, which explains the big drop in sales (nearly -80%). It still managed to sell 22 815 additional units, which brings total sales to 130 134 units. How soon it reaches 200 000 units will entirely depend on how quickly Neos can ship new copies to retailers!

Milestones this week includes:

  • Mario Golf: Super Rush has now sold over 150 184 units (10 397 units, +1%, this week). 200 000 units should be an easily achievable milestone for this game!

The usual evergreen titles all saw a noticeable increase in sales this week thanks to the 4-day week-end.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales saw a rather modest increase with 69 738 units sold (up from 64 107 units last week). In comparison, Nintendo Switch sales had jumped to 125 231 units during the same week last year.

As a result of such a big drop Year on Year, the gap between 2020 and 2021 sales is melting like snow in the scorching sun. There’s now less than 250 000 units separating the two years, and that number is bound to go down rather quickly during the next few weeks… So far, 3 289 079 units have been sold this year, vs. 3 054 439 units last year.

There’s two main reasons to explain such a big drop sales Year on Year:

  • a non-negligible number of people are waiting for the recently announced OLED model
  • but mostly, there’s no mega-hit the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons this year. The line-up is pretty solid, and the evergreen titles are as popular as ever, but Animal Crossing provided a major boost to Nintendo Switch sales throughout most of 2020.

It was expected that 2021 sales would start trailing behind 2020 sales starting this Summer, though the Nintendo Switch did put up quite the fight during the first half of the year. Even if it’s not been as popular as last year during the past few weeks, sales remain unusually high for a console that has already sold 20 629 453 units (with 3 972 012 units for the Lite model, and 16 657 441 units for the OG model).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped to 491 units this week (down from 584 units last week, and 1 042 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 18 298 units (down from 37 019 units last year), and LTD sales to 24 577 206 units.
