[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 2, 2021 (January 04 – January 10) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 2, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 2)

Week 2 was fairly quiet for the Japanese market, which really isn’t all that surprising for the first post-holiday season week.

Thanks to strong sales and a lack of notable new releases, Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! is once again #1 of Software sales. It’s the 8th week in a row that the party game is the best-selling game in Japan. This week, it sold 87 087 units (-54%), which brings total sales to 1 510 537 units. That’s right: it’s now sold over 1.5 million units, and it should reach the 2 million units milestone within the next couple of months.

Highlights this week include:

  • 02./02. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo) – 45.124 / 6.517.609 (-52%). It’s now sold over 6.5 million units at retail alone, and it’s clearly not done selling!
  • 08./09. [NSW] Pikmin 3 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 14.069 / 513.225 (-61%). It’s now sold over 500 000 units, and if you add digital sales, there’s little doubt it will end up selling over 1 million units when all is said and done.

This week, all games saw a significant drop in sales, but despite that, the many evergreen titles in the Top 10 Software all sold more than last year during the same week. Software-wise, the Nintendo Switch is off to a great start in 2021, and it looks like Q1 is indeed going to be a strong quarter if those sales and the upcoming games line-up are anything to go by.

Famitsu – Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch managed to sell 167 596 units this week (down from 312 121 units last week). Despite the end of the holiday season, sales remain unusually strong and the drop in sales is fairly limited (about -50%). Demand for the console remain quite strong (with sporadic shortages at some stores), and it will be interesting to see how long it can stay at such levels.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 116 301 units during the same week last year. With just the first two weeks, 2021 is already 78 000 units ahead of 2020. Given the massive shortages that severely impacted sales during Q1 2020, it’s more than likely that the gap will keep on widening during the next few weeks, especially as the Q1 2021 line-up is far stronger (though there’s no equivalent to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March!).

LTD sales for the Nintendo Switch now stand at 17 820 091 units, with 3 173 022 units for the Lite model and 14 647 069 units for the OG model. With the way things are going, it’s more than likely that the console will reach its next milestone (18 million units) before the end of the month.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 551 units this week (down from 714 units last week, and 943 units last year). This brings YTD sales to 1 265 units (down from 4 973 units last year), and LTD sales to 24 560 173 units.
