[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 18, 2021 (April 26 – May 02) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 18, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 18)

New Pokémon Snap was released just in time for the Golden Week in Japan, and it looks like this had a positive impact on sale. This long-awaited “sequel” to the Nintendo 64 classic is off to a great start with 147 742 units sold during the first 3 days.

In comparison, the original sold just under 100 000 units (94 846 units to be precise) at launch, though it went to sell nearly 500 000 units LTD (495 784 units to be precise). New Pokémon Snap should have no trouble outselling its predecessor, especially if you take digital sales into account (it was #2 of sales on the Nintendo eShop in April).

As expected, the Golden Week had a really positive impact on sales, especially evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch (+19% for Monster Hunter Rise and +69% for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury).

The Golden Week is usually a pretty important week for the video games market in Japan, though the past few years were rather average compared to usual. But this year, it was fairly strong… for the Nintendo Switch, at least! The console sold no less than 165 268 units, which is a really solid performance (+60 000 units compared to Week 17).

Last year, the Nintendo Switch sold “only” 115 043 units during the Golden Week, but back then, shortages were still in full force. This year, Nintendo was able to ship more units and avoid widespread shortages (though the OG model can still be hard to find in some stores). Demand for the console remains unusually strong for a platform already on its 5th year on the market.

The gap between 2021 and 2020 sales keeps widening, with 2 341 467 units sold so far this year (vs. 2 130 326 units last year). Since shortages really impacted sales badly last year, it’s pretty safe to expect 2021 sales to stay well ahead of 2020 sales during the next couple of months. The second half of the year is going to be another story, though!

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 19 681 841 units since launch (it should hit the 20 million units milestone before the end of the month), with 3 741 067 units for the Lite model, and 15 940 774 units for the OG model.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo 3DS didn’t really benefit from the Golden Week, though it’s hardly a surprise for a platform that’s already been discontinued for several months. It sold 543 units this week (vs. 564 units the previous week, and 1 704 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 12 347 units (vs. 23 073 units last year), and YTD sales at 24 571 255 units.
