Japan: Splatoon 2 sells over 1 million units within first month, results of eb-i survey

Yesterday, Famitsu shared its latest sales data for the Japanese market, and revealed that Splatoon 2 sold 38 642 additional units during Week 33. But more importantly, it’s now sold over 1 million units at retail (including download cards): a feat that was accomplished in less than a month. And just like that, the Nintendo Switch has its very first million-seller!

The attach rate is also quite impressive, because as of August 20th, the Nintendo Switch had sold “only” 1 479 770 units. Said attach rate is even more impressive if you add digital sales, though those were rather limited since the game was not hard to find in stores (the console itself, on the other hand…).

In comparison, it wasn’t until December 16th, 2015 that Nintendo announced Splatoon had sold over 1 million units in Japan… and that’s including digital sales! It just goes to show just how much better Splatoon 2 has been selling, which is no wonder: the Nintendo Switch is a much more popular, and so far much healthier, platform!

Famitsu also shares the results of a survey held by eb-i on August 7th and August 8th. They surveyed men and women aged 5 to 69 in 47 prefectures across Japan, via the internet (8887 men, and 7677 women, to be precise), and the results are quite interesting.

First, the survey reveals that the majority of people who have the game are male (about 73.9%), with teens being the most common age group. This is in line with the “usual” profile of Nintendo Switch users when it comes to gender (about 65.9% of them are male), but there’s a striking gap when it comes to age. After all, only 27.1% of Nintendo Switch users are teens, as opposed to 40.3% for Splatoon 2.

What this survey shows is that the vast majority of Splatoon 2 users are younger than 20 years old (68%), as opposed to only 45.2% for the Nintendo Switch. In other words, Splatoon 2 has been able to bring a younger audience to the platform, which is pretty good news for Nintendo as that audience has traditionally been the most present on Nintendo platforms.

It’s especially true for users aged 5 to 9, which are now more common thanks to Splatoon 2.

Here’s the full results of the survey:

Age of Splatoon 2 users

  • 5 to 9 years old: 22.7%
  • 10 to 19 years old: 40.3%
  • 20 to 29 years old: 17.6%

  • 40 to 49 years old: 7.6%
  • 50 to 59 years old: 1.7%
  • Over 60 years old: 0%

Age of Nintendo Switch users

  • 5 to 9 years old: 18.1%
  • 10 to 19 years old: 27.1%
  • 20 to 29 years old: 20.7%
  • 30 to 39 years old: 14.3%
  • 40 to 49 years old: 12.5%
  • 50 to 59 years old: 5%
