Japan: more sales data for Week 46, 2017, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 46 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 46, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 345 000 units, which is 313.42% of Week 45 sales… a massive increase, quite obviously due to the release of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

It’s the first time since the release of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Time that we’ve seen such a huge increase in Software sales during a given week.

Media Create report that Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold 1 163 000 units at launch (including the dual-pack, counted as two units), which is about 60% of what Pokémon Sun and Moon did at launch (1 893 000 units).

They also share comparisons with previous “third-entries”:

  • Diamond and Pearl: 1 589 000 units > Platinum: 963 000 units (60.63%)
  • Black & White: 2 558 000 units > Black 2 and White 2: 1 562 000 units (61.06%)

As we can see, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon had a similar sales ratio with the original versions as its predecessors. You might be tempted to think that’s good news, but there’s an issue… two, in fact.

First: the sell-through is unusually low: about 70% for the stand-alone versions. Also, the large number of dual-packs means sales are going to drop harder than usual during the second, as they’re really inflating first week sales (though that’s not something Media Create are directly pointing out).

That being said, Media Create also remind us that Pokémon Sun and Moon sold about 983 000 units in December alone, and they’re expecting the holiday period to have a good impact on sales. For Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to have any chance of topping 2 million units sold in Japan, it will need really strong sales during the holiday season.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day 1 sell-through for a few games on Nintendo platforms:

  • [3DS] Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (Capcom) (¥2.990) – 10% (two days tracked). A surprisingly low debut, which is quite worrying (especially as 10% is for the first two days, not just Day 1). It’s definitely unexpected for Capcom to overship a low profile release by such a wide margin;
  • [3DS] Beyblade Burst: God (FuRyu) – 10%. Low debut for yet another licenced game from FuRyu, bound to have pretty low sales during launch week;
  • [NSW] LEGO Worlds (Warner Entertainment Japan) (¥3.700). Terribly poor debut.

Week 46 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold about 1 178 000 units at launch (again, with the dual-pack counted as two units), and actually provides a sales breakdown for each version:

  • Pokémon Ultra Sun: 340 394 units
  • Pokémon Ultra Moon: 338 618 units
  • Dual-Pack: 249 700 units (499 400 units)

Just like Media Create, their sell-through ratio for this game is about 70%, which is quite low, especially compared to Pokémon Sun and Moon (about 90%, with 1 910 000 units sold at launch, and 3 670 000 units sold LTD). That’s definitely a bit sluggish, but nothing really worrying.

Dengeki also point out that on Nintendo 3DS, mainline Pokémon games have sold roughly 50% of their total sales during the first week. If we applied a similar ratio to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we would end up with 2.35 million units… which is, unfortunately, a tad too high.

While holidays sales are most likely going to be strong, 2018 is going to be an entirely different story, what with the Nintendo 3DS truly on its way out. As mentioned above, for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to top 2 million units sold, it will need really strong sales during the holiday period.

Other sales data this week include Dragon Quest X (59 000 units for all platforms combined), and Super Mario Odyssey (57 000 units this week, 707 000 units since launch).

For this week, Hardware sales increased by 23.5% to 150 000 units, with Software sales exploding with +203.2% (1 330 000 units) thanks to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. About the Nintendo 3DS specifically, sales increased by 2.3, to 38 000 units. As for Software, Week 56 was the second biggest week after the Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age launch week, back in July.
