Japan: more sales data for Week 42 2017, First Half FY 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 42 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 42, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 533 000 units, which is only 181.31% of Week 41 sales. Sales are back on the rise, thanks to the new releases (as sales of previously released titles were down).

Unfortunately, that’s all Media Create had to say this week about the Japanese market as a whole and Nintendo platforms…

Day-1 sell-through

Today, we have the Day-1 sell-through ratio for the following two Nintendo 3DS games:

  • [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux # <RPG> (Atlus) (¥6.480) – 40%. An “ok” debut, given sales for RPG (especially “hardcore titles like Atlus’) tend to have pretty frontloaded sales (majority of sales concentrated on the first day). However, it’s not clear if that ratio includes the (rather expensive) Limited Edition, that has been selling out at various retailers;
  • [3DS] Idol Time PriPara: Yume All-Star Live! # <ACT> (Takara Tomy) (¥5.500) < 10%. A rather mediocre debut, but as a family-focused game, sales should be better during the week-end.

Week 42, First Half of FY 2018 (Dengeki)

Last week, Dengeki shared some more data about the first half of the current Fiscal Year. According to them, the gap between successful games and less successful games is wider than ever.

During the first half of the current Fiscal Year, the number of million-selling games went from 1 to 3. And if you look at just the Top 10, you can see that sales have increased by 58.8%: a noticeable increase… but a pretty unequal one. Indeed, if you take total Software sales (not just the Top 10), then that increase is only 8.2%…

In the Top 500, there’s 3 million-sellers, but the number of games selling between 200 000 and 500 000 units has dropped from 8 to 5. As for games that sold between 100 000 and 200 000 units, there’s only 8 of them now (as opposed to 17 previously). Also, the number of games selling less than 10 000 units has also increased, going from 333 to 347. Those account for 69.4% of games released.

This is actually a pretty worrying trend, as that means less games from third-party publishers, who are only going to greenlight games that are guaranteed to sell a certain amount. This leads to an impoverishment of the offer, with not only less games being made, but also with said games becoming increasing similar, as publishers stick to series and formulas they know can sell.

As mentioned by Dengeki, the widening of the sales gap is a pretty bad thing for the video game market as a whole, which is throwing it in a negative spiral. That’s for this reason they hope the larger titles will be able to revitalise the entire market.
