Japan: more sales data for Week 38, Pokkén Tournament DX, August 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 38 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 38, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 360 000 units, which is 87.52% of Week 37 sales. Hardware sales also dropped to 80 000 units (95.84% of Week 37 sales). Both Software and Hardware are down, despite two public holidays during the same week (Monday and Saturday).

Usually, you see an increase in sales during that period, especially family-focused titles (which happened last year), but nothing of the sort happened this year.

Pokkén Tournament was one of the new releases, and it sold 53 000 units. Media Create report a pretty low sell-through ratio: only 41.39%, which means that more than half of all units shipped to retailers are still to be sold. They note that this Nintendo Switch port of the game still sold about 75% of what the original did on Wii U, which is actually pretty good for a port of game barely a year old.

Quite interestingly, the Wii U version of Pokkén Tournament also had a low sell-through ratio (actually, it was even lower: 36.65%), and yet, it went on to sell over 179 000 units. Therefore, Media Create expect Pokkén Tournament to also sell on the long-run, and especially during the upcoming holiday season.

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day-1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch games (and one New Nintendo 3DS title):

  • [PS4] FIFA 18 (Ronaldo Edition) <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2017.09.26} (¥9.800)
  • [NSW] FIFA 18 <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2017.09.29} (¥5.800)
  • [PS3] FIFA 18 <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2017.09.29} (¥7.800)
  • [XB1] FIFA 18 # <SPT> (Electronic Arts) {2017.09.29} (¥7.800)

* 20%. One thing to note is that the game is officially launching on Friday, but some stores still went and started selling it early. The list goes from best-selling to worst-selling version.

  • [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2017.09.28} (¥7.800)
  • [3DS] Fire Emblem Warriors |New Nintendo 2DS/New Nintendo 3DS| # <ACT> (Koei Tecmo) {2017.09.28} (¥6.800)

* 30%, with the Nintendo Switch version as the best-seller. A bit on the low side, but hopefully, week-end sales will help.

Week 38 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report similar sales for Pokkén Tournament DX: 52 000 units sold, and 45% as sell-through ratio. In comparison, Pokkén Tournament sold 70 000 during the first week in Japan, with 184 000 units since launch. Also, Dengeki report 9 000 units sold for Dragon Quest X: All-in-One Package on Nintendo Switch.

Unlike Media Create, they report an increase in sales for Hardware (90 000 units, +3.5%), but the two trackers are in agreement when it comes to Software sales (365 000 units, -5.7%).

Now that the Summer holiday period is truly over, the market has already calmed down a fair bit. The next major releases will not arrive until late October, with Super Mario Odyssey on October 27th, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on November 17th, and more.

In their weekly report, Dengeki mention the Tokyo Game Show 2017, that was held from September 21st to September 24th last week. 609 companies were among the exhibitors (including 317 foreign companies). 254 311 people attended, which is slightly lower than in 2016 (271 224 people).

August 2017 – Digital sales estimates (Famitsu, July 31st to August 27th)

In its latest issue, Famitsu shares the latest digital sales estimates for Japan, and more precisely for August 2017.

To the surprise of no one, Splatoon 2 was the most popular game digitally last month, which is quite a nice performance given the game itself wasn’t hard to find in stores at all (the console itself, on the other hand…). Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. opened with about 14 000 units sold digitally, which is a decent debut since it was released at the end of the month (and didn’t sell out).

Unsurprisingly, Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo had a poor performance on the Nintendo eShop, which is pretty much the norm for single-player games (especially those that underperform). The Snack World: Trejarers also didn’t do too hot digitally, but that’s to be expected for games aimed at kids.

Here’s the Top 29 Software (digital) for August 2017 in Japan:
