Japan: more sales data for Week 49 2019, Pokémon Sword and Shield, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 50)

Unfortunately, no Day 1 sell-through data for Nintendo Switch games this week!

Dengeki (Week 49)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Sword and Shield was the best-selling game in Japan for the 4th week in a row, with 204 000 units sold. The versions breakdown is as follows:

  • Pokémon Sword: 100 594 units sold (939 783 units LTD); 119 000 units if you add the Dual-Pack;
  • Pokémon Shield: 66 569 units sold (639 858 units LTD): 85 000 units if you add the Dual-Pack;
  • Dual Pack: 18 463 units sold (342 339 units LTD).

Since launch, the game has sold over 2 264 000 units, with 1 282 000 units for Pokémon Sword, and 982 000 units for Pokémon Shield. Here’s how the past few mainline games fared during the first month:

  • Pokémon X and Y: 2.96 million units
  • Pokémon Sun and Moon: 3.30 million units
  • Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire: 2.16 million units

While Pokémon Sword and Shield seems to be down compared to the past mainline games, it’s worth noting that digital sales on Nintendo 3DS were negligible. Meanwhile, digital sales for Pokémon Sword and Shield are extremely strong (helped by the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers), as confirmed by launch week sales and also the fact that both versions have been topping the weekly Nintendo eShop charts for quite a while already.

Dengeki point out that on Nintendo 3DS, the various Pokémon games sold about 70% of their total sales during the first month. If such a ratio was to be applied to Pokémon Sword and Shield, we would end up with 3.32 million units sold LTD. Of course, this is only for retail sales; in fact, adding digital sales, the game would be pretty much guaranteed to sell well over 4 million units LTD.

Next: Yo-kai Watch 4++, the only entry to sell over 10 000 units. The game sold pretty poorly, with only 13 000 units on the two platforms it was released on (the Nintendo Switch version sold 10 261 units, leaving only scraps to the PlayStation 4 version). Since launch, Yo-kai Watch 4 has sold over 280 000 units LTD, which is exceedingly poor for a mainline Yo-kai Watch game.

Other than that, there was not much activity in the top of the charts, once again dominated by the usual evergreen titles. The only other entry on Nintendo Switch this week is Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection, which sold only 1 350 units.

This week, Dengeki take a look at sales for the current Fiscal Year, as of November (April 1st to December 1st). Good news: sales are up! Here’s some raw data:

  • Hardware: 3.26 million units (+13.1%) / 92.7 billion Yen (+8.6%)
  • Software: 14.63 million units (+5.1%) / 95.9 billion Yen (+8%)
  • Total: 188.6 billion Yen (+8.3%), up from -2.1% at the end of October

To the surprise of no one, the Nintendo Switch is dominating the market, with no less than 76.9% market share for Hardware, and 65.1% market share for Software.
