Japan: more sales data for Week 42 2019, Ring Fit Adventure, SoS: Friends of Mineral Town (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 43)

Unfortunately, no sell-through data this week!

Dengeki (Week 42)

Dengeki report that Ring Fit Adventure sold about 67 000 units at launch, with a satisfactory sell-through ratio: about 70%. With this game, Nintendo are clearly looking to attract new users, which is why those Week 1 numbers may not seem all that impressive at first glance. But it’s long-term sales that truly matter, and Ring Fit Adventure definitely has a lot of potential in that regard (especially with the positive word of mouth).

Next, we have Story of Seasons: Friend of Mineral Town with 63 000 units sold during the first few days. The sell-through ratio seems a bit low (55%), but retailers should have no trouble selling the remaining units. After all, as pointed by Dengeki, games in the series usually sell only 35 to 40% off their total sales during the first week. Therefore, it’s pretty safe to expect this one to sell well in the long run (even if it’s just a remake).

The other entries didn’t sell all that much, and the top of the charts is once again dominated by the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s how the other entries fared this week:

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition (Spike-Chunsoft): 7 320 units sold. A fairly solid result for a late port;
  • Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition (Bandai-Namco): 4 827 units. A rather unimpressive debut, to say the least.

Next, Dengeki point out that during the first half of the current Fiscal Year, the video games market was in more or less the same shape as in 2018. During the second half, there’s quite a few big titles that will pull big numbers, but there’s definitely concern that the sales gap is only going to widen.

In 2018, there was no million-seller during the first half of the Fiscal Year, but big titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Party showed up during the second half. As a result, the market received a big boost, but the sales gap worsened.

This Fiscal Year, there’s once again several major titles during the second half (including Pokémon Sword and Shield), and if those pull other games with them, this will be pretty beneficial to the market as a whole. However, it’s quite likely that only a select few will sell well, and the sales gap will keep worsening.

And the thing is, the gap is already quite bad. During the first half of the current Fiscal Year, 392 of the games in the Top 500 (so about 80%) didn’t even sell 10 000 units.
