Japan: more sales data for Week 3 2019, December 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 3)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 638 000 units, which is 107.47% of Week 2 sales. That slight increase is due to the release of Ace Combat 7, which sold more than expected.

Unfortunately, Hardware sales are once again down, to 95 000 units (91.42% of Week 2 sales). It’s the first time since the 2nd week of November that sales dropped below the 100 000 units/week threshold.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 4)

No data this week, unfortunately.

Dengeki (Week 3)

Dengeki report that New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe sold 94 000 units during its second week, bringing total sales to 272 000 units. As for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it sold 53 000 units, bringing total sales to 2.79 million units.

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch keeps on dominating the market. This week, despite sales slowing down compared to the holiday season, the Nintendo Switch accounts for 75% of total Hardware sales with 79 000 units sold. The console has now sold over 7.37 million units, which is more than the Wii after the same amount of time on the market (6.66 million units). The Wii ended up selling over 12 million units, and it looks like the Nintendo Switch will have no trouble doing better.

But while the Nintendo Switch is doing pretty great on its own, Dengeki point out that it’s not quite able to compensate for the drop in sales of the Nintendo 3DS. It’s something Nintendo is probably not too happy about, though it’s not really the end of the world for the company: the Nintendo Switch generates more revenue as a whole (console itself is more expensive, and Software sales are also quite strong).

In December specifically, Hardware sales for the Nintendo Switch topped 154.8 billion Yen (+26.6%). But on the other hand, Nintendo 3DS sales dropped by 77.6%, to 14.7 billion Yen. Overall, Hardware sales dropped by 9.7%, to 169.6 billion Yen.

In other words, the Nintendo Switch isn’t quite able to compensate for the drop in sales of the Nintendo 3DS, but it did come close.
