Japan: more sales data for Week 24 2018, Nintendo Switch (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 24)
Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 24, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 249 000 units, which is 69.44% of Week 23 sales. This week, there was no less than 7 new releases, but they all sold relatively small amounts: only one game sold more than 10 000 units (Grancrest Senki), while the rest all sold about or less than 5 000 units each).
As a result, it’s no wonder that sales of new games only account for 18.68% of their sales during Week 23: they dropped from 145 000 units to only 27 000 units. Talk about a harsh drop!
On the other hand, sales of already released games are on the rise: they went from 213 000 units to 221 000 units, which is 104.12% of Week 23 sales. It’s the very reason Software sales didn’t drop like a rock this week.
Splatoon 2 was #1 of sales with about 16 000 units sold (2.38 million units LTD), and for the very first time since the beginning of the year. According to Media Create, during Week 24, the game sold 117.08% of what it sold during Week 23: an increase they tie to the release of the Octo Expansion on June 14th.
Next week will be a big one, with the Mario Tennis Aces x Minecraft combo, and will make us all forget about the rather uneventful week that was Week 23.

Media Create (Day 1 sell-through)
This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one, lone Nintendo Switch game:
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 20%. Low sell-through, but sales are expected to pick up during the week-end (just like most family-focused games). Also, retailers are expecting the game to sell well on the long run, so they have probably ordered more units than usual, knowing pretty well they will have no trouble selling any remaining units.
No data for Mario Tennis Aces, since it was released today (Friday).

Dengeki (Week 24, Fiscal Year 17)
Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that Splatoon 2 topped the charts this week, with about 15 000 units sold. Overall, sales were rather sluggish, so it’s no wonder a popular game like Splatoon 2, that sells well on the long run, managed to rank #1 almost a full year since its release. So far, over 2.43 million units have been sold since launch, and there’s no doubt the game will reach 2.5 millions sometime in July.
This week, Hardware sales grew by 12.3% to 81 000 units, while Software sales dropped noticeably to 243 000 units (-30.8%).
Next, Dengeki compare the market share of the major publishers on both the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4 during the past Fiscal Year, to illustrate just how one-sided things are on the former.

In other words, only Nintendo games (and games contracted to third-party developers) sold a meaningful amount of units. As a result of the tepid support, less games were released during the Fiscal Year, and the market didn’t grow. Naturally, Dengeki hope that a third-party game will finally become a hit on Nintendo Switch, in order to revitalise the market as a whole.
