Japan: more sales data for Week 13 2019, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 13)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 451 000 units. They point out that most of the new releases this week were relatively low-key, and so sales of new games dropped sharply to 23.53% of Week 12 sales.

There wasn’t much to compensate for the drop in sales for games released the previous week (like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which went from 158 000 units sold to 45 000 units sold during its second week). As result, total Software sales only account for 65.39% of Week 12 sales: the first time since the last week of February that sales are down.

Media Create also report that Yoshi’s Crafted World sold about 53 000 units at launch, with an extremely low sell-through ratio: 35.96%. Fortunately, unlike some recent Nintendo releases, retailers should have no trouble selling the remaining copies of this game.

Yoshi’s Crafted world did better than its predecessors, Yoshi’s Woolly World on Wii U (31 000 units at launch) and Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World on Nintendo 3DS (40 000 units at launch). However, it had literally no impact on Nintendo Switch Hardware sales, which dropped to 50 000 units (89.78% of Week 12 sales).

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 14)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one Nintendo Switch game (platforms and games are usually listed based on sales, from most successful to least successful… but not this time, since there’s only one game!):

  • [NSW] Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission (Bandai Namco) – 40%. Fairly decent debut.

Dengeki (Week 13)

Dengeki report that Yoshi’s Crafted World sold about 55 000 units, which is better than the latest entry in the series, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World (39 000 units at launch, and 162 000 units LTD). However, the sell-through ratio isn’t as good: only 45% (which is still better than what Media Create reported). As for Winning Post 9, it sold 19 000 units on the two platforms it was released on, with only 5 500 units on Nintendo Switch.

Here’s the sales of other new entries:

  • [NSW] DIABOLIK LOVERS CHAOS LINEAGE (Idea Factory): 3 357 units
  • [NSW] Memories Off -Innocent Fille- for Dearest (5pb.): 2 290 units (2 064 units on PlayStation 4, and 1 207 units on PS Vita)
  • [NSW] RemiLore: Lost Girl in the Lands of Lore (Pikii): 1 431 units (1 154 units on PlayStation 4)
  • [NSW] LEGO Movie 2 Videogame (Warner Bros.): 1 313 units (PlayStation 4 version did not even chart)

Now that the Fiscal Year is over, Dengeki is sharing some data for it. The data covers the full Fiscal Year, so the period going from April 2nd 2018 to March 31st 2019. As expected, the whole market is down:

  • Hardware: 5.95 million units (-17.1%) / 178.6 billion Yen (-11.1%)
  • Software: 27.10 million units (-16.7%) / 177.3 billion Yen (-13.7%)
  • Total: 355.9 billion Yen (-12.4%)

The Nintendo Switch saw a major increase in Hardware sales, with 3.93 million units sold (+13.9%). It accounts for two thirds of the market, with a 66.2% market share. As for Software sales, they increased by 54.2%, to 14.18 million units: that’s over half of total Software sales (52.3% market share).

So, why is the market down if the Nintendo Switch is doing so well? The problem comes from the other platforms, which all saw their sales drop sharply (especially handhelds). The main rival, the PlayStation 4, saw its Hardware sales drop to 1.45 million units (27.4%), while its Software sales dropped to 9.89 million units (-12.8%). As for the Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation Vita, their sales dropped by nearly 50%.

Dengeki point out that it’s the first time in 3 years that the market is down.

Next, here’s the Top 5 Software:

  1. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo): 3.05 million units
  2. [NSW] Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee (The Pokémon Company): 1.47 million units
  3. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo): 990 000 units
  4. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo): 740 000 units
  5. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III (Square-Enix): 730 000 units

The Nintendo Switch largely dominated sales, with 4 of the games from the Top 5 (and the 4 at the top to boot), and 8 of the games from the Top 10.
