[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 39, 2016 (Sept. 25 – Oct. 2) [Top 50]

Media Create – Software

Several games came out during Week 39 in Japan, but not a single one was on a Nintendo platform. Those who were already in Media Create’s Top 20 have been holding rather well (with some exceptions), such as Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura. It managed to go up 1 place this week, despite sales dropping by 25%.

During Week 39, 15 541 additional units were sold, which brings the total to 1 260 760 units since launch. That means retailers still have between 40-60 000 units left from the first week shipment, which should be gone in a couple of months at the latest.

The only Wii U game in the Top 20 is now Minecraft: Wii U Edition, which is merrily trucking along week after week. It’s sold a total of 137 819 units since launch, including 6 907 units during Week 39 (-24%). As for Splatoon, it’s now gone from the Top 20 altogether, for the first time in 2016. Sales have been dropping continuously in the past few months, mostly due to the Wii U dying a rather slow but premature death.

Next, let’s take a look at how various Nintendo 3DS games (that have been in the Top 20 for a few weeks already) are faring:

• 13./14. Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 4.957 / 185.313 (-8%). Sales are pretty steady, which is good news for GungHo as we’re entering one of the slowest periods of the year for video game sales. It should reach 200 000 units sometime in November, and maybe 250 000 units before the end of the year if sales remain steady enough;
• 14./13. Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 4.706 / 444.132 (-17%). It will reach 450 000 units sold in the next couple of weeks, and 500 000 units this year is pretty much guaranteed (unless holiday sales are really disappointing). With great holidays sales, it may even get close to 600 000 units sold LTD;
• 15./11. Dragon Ball: Fusions (Bandai Namco Games)- 4.350 / 170.046 (-28%). Sales have been rather steady in the past few weeks, but it looks like they have started to weaken.

With the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon drawing nearer and nearer, Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire sales remain remarkably steady, with 4 184 units sold this week (-9%). They’ve now topped 2 900 000 units sold at retail (and excluding the Double-Pack), and it looks like it may very well reach 3 million units when all is said and done.

Finally, we have One Piece: Dai Kaizoku Colosseum at #20, with only 3 783 units sold according to Media Create. Its second week wasn’t nearly as bad as you would usually expect (-58%), but its launch was so awful, this is hardly something worth celebrating. At this rate, it’s most definitely not going to even reach 50 000 units sold LTD…

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s nothing to say about the Wii U, dying a slow and painful death. It only sold 2 111 units this weeks, and it looks like it may drop below 2 000 units next week. As for Paper Mario: Color Splash, releasing next week, it shouldn’t have a significant impact on sale, since many fans most likely already own a Wii U.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are down by about 6 000 units this week, with 27 424 units sold. Compared to Media Create data for last year, we can see Nintendo’s handheld is still up Year on Year, which is a pretty positive sign. Unfortunately, it will not last much longer, as October isn’t the best of months for video game sales. What’s more, it doesn’t look like Monster Hunter Stories is going to sell well, and have a significant impact on sales…

This week, Nintendo 2DS sales are down by about 4 000 units, which isn’t really surprising given the lack of new releases (and the fact that sales were steady last week thanks to the two public holidays). And yet, it’s thanks to this new model that Nintendo 3DS sales are up Year on Year. The New Nintendo 3DS (XL) is also down, the the drop is not as noticeable as with the Nintendo 2DS.

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 242 450 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 757 550 units during the next 13 weeks. In other words, it needs 58 273 units / week, on average.
