[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 17, 2016 (April 25 – May 1st) [Top 50]

NB: the post has been updated with more data (including Hardware), and analysis!

Software

With Week 17, we have the start of the infamous Golden Week (series of public holiday, generally favorable to video game sales in Japan), on Friday. It’s for this reason that Kirby: Planet Robobot came out last week in Japan, as it’s going to be Nintendo’s big game for that holiday. And it looks like it’s off to a pretty good start, with about 144 846 units sold.

That’s 40-60% of all units shipped to retailer for Day 1 according to Famitsu. That may seem a bit on the low side, but it’s just retailers ordering enough copies for the Golden Weeks. It would be quite surprising if they had any trouble getting rid of all the units ordered.

As a comparison, Kirby Triple Deluxe (also on Nintendo 3DS) sold 225 448 during launch week, back in January 2014. While this may seem like a worrying drop, there is nothing to worry about… now. For starters, Kirby: Planet Robobot is going to have a much better second week than its predecessor, thanks to the Golden Week (which ends tomorrow).

Kirby Triple Deluxe, on the other hand, came out in January, which isn’t the best of periods for game sales. What more, reception for Kirby: Planet Robobot seems pretty positive so far (even more than for its predecessor), which is a pretty good sign. Kirby Triple Deluxe ended up selling almost 800 000 units according to Famitsu, and it will be pretty interesting to see if its successor will manage to come close to that.

Kirby Planet RobobotYo-kai Sangokushi is one of the games which benefited the most from the start of the golden Week, during Week 17: its sales increased by 20%, and there’s no doubt they’ll remain strong during Week 18. This week, the game sold about 34 648, and it should reach 500 000 units next week (it’s currently at 464 886).

As for Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, its sales dropped by 6% for Week 17 (with about 15 000 units sold), which is not too bad, but nothing to write home about either. Next week should see stronger sales, since that’s when the bulk of the Golden Week is. It should have no trouble reaching 600 000 units within the next couple of weeks (it’s currently standing at about 572 355 units sold).

Thanks to both the Golden Week and new shipments of the Wii U Premium Pack, Super Mario Maker sales were boosted by 61%, which allowed it to sell even more than its holiday buddy, Splatoon. With 9 458 units sold, the game is proving pretty popular during that holiday (it is a Wii U game that came out more than six months ago, after all), but as usual, its sales heavily rely on the Wii U Premium pack it’s bundled with.

Talking of Splatoon, it’s #12 with 8 826 units sold. To the surprise of no one, the start of the Golden Week had a pretty positive impact on sales, which received a +36% boost. Next week, sales are going to remain pretty strong, but even after that, it’s not going to leave the Top 20 any time soon.

The Star Fox Zero + Star Fox Guard bundle is still in the Top 20, but dropped from #5 to #14. It sold 7 694 units during Week 17 (-55%, a better drop than usual for a second week…. but at the same time, sales of Week 1 were already pretty low to begin with), and 24 808 units since launch. As for the stand-alone version, it dropped from the Top 20 altogether.

Next, we have a couple of Nintendo 3DS titles which are going to do pretty well during Week 18:

  • Disney Art Academy: 5 155 units sold during Week 17 (+11%), 35 871 units since launch;
  • Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics: 4 956 units sold during Week 17 (back in the Top 20), 149 273 units since launch.

Finally, we have Terraria, which had a pretty average second week with 3 968 units sold (a 45% drop). Next week, with the Golden Week, we should be able to start seeing if there’s a chance for the game to sell on the long run. As for LEGO Marvel Avengers, which also came out during Week 18 in Japan, only the Nintendo 3DS version charted: it landed at #26 of the Famitsu chart, with 3 325 units sold (20-40% of all units shipped to retailers). Do not ask about the other versions.

Hardware

Hardware-wise, the beginning of the Golden Week had a pretty positive impact on Nintendo 3DS sales, which are over 25 000 units for Week 17. In fact, they’re pretty much at the same level they were during the same week in 2015, which is a positive sign. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get back the title of best-selling platform from the PS4, powered-up by the release of the latest Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball title.

Now, it remains to be seen how Nintendo’s handheld will perform during the main part of the Golden Week, but there’s no reason to doubt sales will be boosted some more (especially with a strong line-up made of Kirby: Planet Robobot, Yo-kai Sangokushi, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Happy Price Selections titles such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf).

As for the Wii U, both the Golden Week and new shipments had a positive impact on sales. But no need to go fetch some champagne, as the Wii U “only” sold 10 020 units. In comparison, it sold 22 898 units during the same week in 2015… that’s quite the drop!

But with Nintendo only planning to ship 800 000 units worldwide before April 2017, and an abysmally empty line-up, it wouldn’t be surprising if Week 18 and 19 were among the last few weeks where the Wii U sold over 10 000 units (outside of holiday periods, obviously) in Japan…
