[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 7, 2019 (February 11th – February 17th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 7, 2019 in Japan.

Media Create

There’s quite a lot of entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, but only one is on Nintendo Switch. Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi with Power-Up Kit sold about 14 000 units on the two platforms it was released on, with only 3 705 units on Nintendo Switch. The platform breakdown is more or less in line with the original version (this is an expanded re-release), which shows that most of the audience for this kind of strategy games isn’t on Nintendo Switch.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version of La Corda d’Oro: Octave did not even chart, which means it sold less than 3 705 units. Based on how previous Otome games have been faring in past year or so, it doesn’t look like the Otome audience has transitioned to the Nintendo Switch, which is definitely not good news for Idea Factory and its Otomate brand. Maybe this will change when Animal Crossing is finally available on the console (since that series has a really high proportion of female players)?

As always, the evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch really shone, especially with the public holiday on Monday. Take New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for example: Media Create report 34 541 units sold, which is only 10% less than during the previous week. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too early to say whether Super Mario Maker 2 is going to have any sort of impact on sales or not (positive or negative). As of this week, the game has sold over 400 000 units (431 771 units to be precise).

Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate shows no signs of slowing down. It sold 29 843 units this week, and that’s only -4% compared to last week. It’s getting closer and closer to the 3 million units milestone, which will be reached in late March / early April. It has sold 2 860 986 units as of this week.

As for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee, its sales dropped slightly during a week that should have seen sales remain flat (or increase slightly). With 15 287 units sold this week, it will reach the 1.5 million units milestone next week.

Finally, Media Create report that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales are perfectly flat, with… +0%. It sold 12 249 additional units, bringing total sales to 2 133 021 units. It looks like sales will remain strong and steady for this game in 2019, though it’s highly unlikely it will be enough to allow it to join Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the 3 million club this year.

Next, let’s take a look at how games are faring in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create:

  • 11./07. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 10.942 / 1.018.889 (-8%). Slight drop this week, but not enough to make it drop below the 10 000 units/week threshold;
  • 14./08. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.905 / 607.502 (+7%). It’s now sold over 600 000 units at retail alone;
  • 15./09. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 8.235 / 1.292.065 (+13%). There’s just no stopping game, drawing near to the 1.3 million units milestone;
  • 16./10. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} (¥5.980) – 7.193 / 2.932.629 (+2%). Many Japanese players making sure they stay fresh every week;
  • 19./12. [NSW] Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Square Enix) {2018.12.20} (¥7.800) – 3.758 / 231.659 (-16%). Most likely the last week in the Top 20 from Media Create for this game. PlayStation 4 has already dropped out of it.

Despite a lack of notable releases, Nintendo Switch sales actually went up this week. Media Create report 65 958 units sold for the console, which is about 4 000 units more than last week. That increase is primarily due to the public holiday on Monday and the strong line-up of evergreen titles, though it’s definitely possible the latest Nintendo Direct presentation convinced more than a few players to finally make the jump and get a Nintendo Switch.

In comparison, the console only sold 39 303 units during the same week, last year. This goes to show how much good a strong line-up of evergreen titles will do to sales, and makes us wonder just how much stronger sales would be with a more solid line-up of new releases.

So far, Nintendo Switch sales are up by a wide margin Year on Year, with nearly 600 000 units sold as of this week (598 316 units). In comparison, after the same amount of weeks, the Nintendo Switch had only sold 405 512 units in 2018. It looks like it will reach 1 million units in 2019 much earlier than it did last year, unless something happens to change the current sales trajectory.

If sales remain strong enough, the Nintendo Switch will top 7.5 million units sold next week (it only needs about 55 000 units during Week 8). It’s currently sitting at 7 445 100 units sold LTD.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are once again perfectly flat with 4 754 units sold (about 330 units more than last week). The handhelds has been left on auto-pilot, but at the very least, said auto-pilot is doing its job properly without big bumps on the road.
