[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 51, 2016 (Dec. 19 – 25) [Top 50]

Update: full top 50 from Media Create added, along with additional comments about Nintendo 3DS sales (see below)!

***

NB: due to the end-of-year break, 4Gamer didn’t share Media Create’s data for Week 51, so we’re going to use Famitsu data for our analysis. Please keep this in mind while reading, to avoid making direct comparisons. Media Create data will be added as soon as it’s available.

Famitsu – Software

Week 51 (with Christmas) is the biggest week of the year for the video game market in Japan, and it clearly shows in the data below. What’s more, this year, the last week of Christmas sales is not split on two weeks, since Christmas was on a Sunday. Therefore, the usual post-Christmas drop will impact only Week 52, which is something to keep in mind when looking at the data for Week 51.

There were two new releases for Week 51 (both on Nintendo 3DS), starting with Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!!. The first Momotetsu entry in over 6 years is off to a great start, with over 132 000 units sold in just four days.

The sell-through ratio is 40-60%, which shows that retailers did order just the right amount of copies (though a second shipment might be needed to last through the end-of-year period, since most companies are on vacation during the first few days of January, which is a problem when you need additional shipments).

Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!! is expecting to sell well on the long run, and should be able to sell 500 000 units LTD. So far, it has one of the highest debut ever (only the Super Famicom and PS1 entries did better). Quite interestingly, the game was developed by Valhalla Games, who also made… Devil’s Third. A much better deal for Nintendo, this time around!

The second entry of the week is Osomatsu-San: Matsu Matsuri!, which sold 20 628 units during its launch week. This is a rather modest debut , though at least the sell-through is pretty good: between 80-100% (this includes the Limited Edition including a New Nintendo 3DS console). It will be interesting to see how that one sells in the upcoming weeks and months.

Next, let’s take a look at how a few key titles performed during this important holiday week. Pokémon Sun and Moon did extremely well, with 322 830 units sold at retail (+71%). This allows the game to top 3 million units sold at retail since launch, and within the first two month to boot.

If sales remain strong throughout 2017 (depending on how big of an impact the rumoured Nintendo Switch port will have on sale), it should be able to top 4 million units sold easily.

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS truly has been the surprise of the 2016 holiday season, and a tremendous success for Nintendo. This week, it sold 315 382 units: sales basically doubled (+109%) from Week 50.

Since launch, it has already sold almost 750 000 units (743 388 units to be more precise), which means it’s definitely going to reach 1 million units LTD, and therefore outsell the Wii U version. This is quite significant, as it’s usually pretty rare for a port to sell more than the original version (though it’s true Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS does include a lot of brand new content, and as such isn’t your run-of-the-mill port).

This graph from Chris1964 clearly shows just how impressive Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS has been (though obviously, releasing closer to the holidays makes direct comparison a bit unfair):

Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki is one of the few titles that didn’t see its sales increase this week, and there’s a good reason for that… shortages! It’s actually pretty amusing, because Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura got a second first-week shipment that wasn’t needed at all, while Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki didn’t get one in time for Christmas…

This third version of Yo-kai Watch 3 sold 176 427 units during Week 51 (-47%), which puts it at 509 667 units since launch. It looks like sales should be able to top 1 million units when all is said and done, which would put all three versions at over 2 million units: not too bad, but quite the drop from Yo-kai Watch 2 (all versions sold over 5 million units combined).

As a result of the shortages for Sukiyaki, sales increased for Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura with 41 593 units sold (+3%). No doubt that the new dual-pack (released the week before) did help with sales, too.

As for Miitopia, it was off to a rather mild debut, but sales remained quite strong during the following weeks. During Week 51, they basically doubled (+107%), with 50 299 units sold. Since launch, 102 810 units have been sold, which is a pretty good result so far. But the real test will be post-holiday sales: will sales remain strong, or will Miitopia fizzle away to oblivion?

Next, let’s take a look at the holiday boost for the many Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games in the Top 30:

  • 10./10. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 33.263 / 241.441 <80-100%> (+121%);
  • 12./11. [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu (Nippon Columbia) – 25.203 / 123.195 <80-100%> (+78%). Unsurprisingly, sales went up again this week, and the game has now sold over 100 000 units. It should be able to reach 150 000 units during the first week of January;
  • 13./14. [3DS] Mario Party: Star Rush (Nintendo) – 25.015 / 135.625 <60-80%> (+87%). Sales remain strong, and should top 150 000 units next week;
  • 14./16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 23.537 / 71.990 <60-80%> (+102%). It should reach 100 000 units sold sometime in January;
  • 16./20. [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo) – 18.301 / 2.628.566 <80-100%> (+161%). Another old Nintendo 3DS games that got a significant boost thanks to the holiday sales;
  • 17./18. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 17.804 / 479.698 <80-100%> (+109%). Sales should top 500 000 units at retail in January;
  • 18./22. [WIU] Super Mario Maker <ACT> (Nintendo) – 16.262 / 972.406 <80-100%> (+165%). Despite the Nintendo 3DS version selling extremely well, the Wii U version hasn’t given up yet, and in fact, should be able to reach 1 million units sometime in January;
  • 20./19. [WIU] Splatoon (Nintendo) – 15.356 / 1.463.148 <80-100%> (+114%). It’s getting closer and closer to the 1.5 million units mark;

During its second week, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Heroes did “ok” with 26 882 units sold (-4%). It’s nothing really impressive, but it’s clear that without the Christmas sales, the drop would be much worse. The  sell-through ratio is between 40-60%, which means retailers still have a lot of copies left.

Finally, as you can see for yourself below, the Nintendo 3DS takes 21 of the 30 spots from the Top 30. With the Wii U, Nintendo takes 25 of the 30 spots… yup, that’s the holiday period for you!

Famitsu – Hardware

Hardware-wise, things were pretty interesting during Week 51. Obviously, we’re talking about the Nintendo 3DS, as Wii U sales remained as disappointing as ever. Yes, Wii U sales almost doubled, but they went from 4 544 units to 8 417 units… nothing to write home about, especially as during the same week last year, the Wii U sold more than 10 times better (over 100 000 units).

The star of the week is the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 229 575 units this week. This is a massive increase for Nintendo’s handheld, with almost twice as many units sold as during the previous week. It’s also better than last year during the same week, when 160 447 units were sold. In fact, the Nintendo 3DS had a better Christmas week than in 2015 and 2014, and almost did as well as Christmas 2013 (232 000 units).

What’s pretty impressive is that even without the Nintendo 2DS, sales would still be up Year on Year for Week 51, which is unexpected. December has been fantastic for the Nintendo 3DS this year, what with Pokémon Sun and Moon, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and other selling extremely well (some of them even better than expected).

Nintendo really played their cards well with the Nintendo 2DS in Japan. So far, the Nintendo 2DS has sold about 300 000 units, and it looks it should have no trouble reaching 500 000 units next year (unfortunately, 1 million units doesn’t seem likely).

This week, the Nintendo 3DS finally reached 2 million units sold in 2016, and with one week left before the end of the year. This is a pretty satisfying result for Nintendo, who might end up selling 23 million Nintendo 3DS LTD (unless sales drop off a cliff in 2017, which doesn’t seem likely… for now?).

For some reason, Media Create’s data for the Nintendo 3DS this week isn’t as good as Famitsu’s: the company reports 176 562 units sold. That being said, it still sold more than it did during the same week last year, which is another positive point for Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS is definitely going to end up with sales down Year to Year for the full year, but at least the drop will be somewhat limited.

And within the next couple of weeks, total sales for the New Nintendo 3DS range will top 5 million units (4 858 852 units so far).

Finally, wondering if Nintendo 3DS sales for 2016 will top 2 million units? The answer is: yes, most definitely, as it’s currently standing at 1 904 221 units. It just needs to sell about 96 000 units during Week 52… which means the Nintendo 3DS has already sold 2 million units this year if you add the Pokémon bundles (Nintendo 2DS, which sold 100 000 units).
