Japan – Media Create sales for Week 43, 2015 (Oct. 19-25) [Top 50]

During Week 43, only two games came out in Japan, and both are on Nintendo 3DS. The first one is The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, which had a rather disappointing launch with only 53 394 units sold during the first four days. But it’s not just Japan, as it seems the game also had a rather weak launch in Europe, though we will have to wait a bit before getting concrete numbers.

There’s several reasons to explain those poor sales, and the first one is the lack of advertising: Nintendo only started promoting the game actively this month (pretty close to launch). The second reason is that the Zelda series isn’t as popular as it used to be in Japan, and in fact, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D even managed to sell better than The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on a weekly basis due to nostalgia.

Finally, there’s the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is a multiplayer focus entry, and previous multiplayer Zelda titles also sold worse than mainline entries (which isn’t all that surprising for spin-offs). However, retailers seem to be expecting The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes to keep selling during the upcoming weeks, and especially during the Holiday period.

The second entry of the week is PriPara Mezase! Idol Grand Prix No.1!, which lands at #2 with 34 035 units sold during the first four days (which is apparently significantly better than the previous entry, on Nintendo 3DS). This kind of game should enjoy good sales during the Holiday period, so it’ll be interesting to keep an eye on it during the next couple of months.

In the rest of the chart, everything is down week on week. 7th Dragon III code:VFD sold 20 824 units during its second week on the market, which is a drop of 82% (pretty typical for a dungeon-RPG). Since launch, SEGA sold 85 776 units of the game, which is basically guaranteed to reach the 100 000 units threshold in early November.

The drop in sales impacts pretty much all games, from Yo-kai Watch Busters to Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, and even Splatoon. However, some games are holding better than others, and it’s actually the case of Splatoon with 13 159 units sold (only -10% compared to last week). Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell exactly if the announcement of the Splatoon Wii U Premium Pack had/will have any impact on sales.

Hardware-wise, nothing much happened during Week 43 in Japan. The Nintendo 3DS is down week on week with 21 429 units sold, and the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes didn’t have any impact whatsoever. And of course, the difference between 2015 and 2014 is just getting wider and wider due to the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS last year.

As for the Wii U, it’s finally dropped below the 10 000 units/week threshold since the launch of Splatoon, back in May. It sold 9 961 units during Week 43, and it’s bound to go even lower in the upcoming weeks. Unfortunately, it’s hard to gauge the impact the Splatoon Premium Pack will have on sales right now, but it’s bound to be popular during the Holiday period.
