[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 4, 2019 (January 21st – January 27th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 4, 2019 in Japan.

Media Create

Week 4 saw the release of a couple of major games, but nothing on Nintendo Switch unfortunately. Therefore, we find the usual suspects in the Top 20 provided by Media Create, starting with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It sold 57 725 additional units during its 3rd week on the market, which is 35% less than during its second week. It’s already sold over 300 000 units (312 869 units to be precise), which means the 400 000 units milestone should be reached in February, and the 500 000 units one in March.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still enjoying strong sales, with 38 478 additional units sold (-22%). Sales once again dropped, but we expect them to go back up next week thanks to payday (same can be said for all the other evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch in the Top 20). Since it’s now sold 2 764 751, we can safely expect it will reach 2.8 million units sold during Week 5 or 6.

As for Super Mario Party, it’s drawing closer and closer to the 1 million units milestone (already reached if you factor in digital sales), with 11 958 additional units sold this week (-29%). This brings total sales to 983 903 units, which means the milestone will be reached during Week 6.

Media Create report that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 10 860 units this week: it’s still holding above the 10 000 units/week threshold. The drop in sales is pretty similar to the one for the other evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch: 28%. It’s now sold 2 096 812 units since launch, and it looks like it’s really not done selling (not a surprise, since it doesn’t look like a new Mario Kart game is going to be announced any time soon).

Meanwhile Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee did drop below the 10 000 units/week, and for the first time since launch. It sold 9 334 units this week, which is 24% less than during Week 3. While those sales are nothing to write home about, they are far from bad. Total sales have topped 1 436 633 units, and it’s pretty safe to expect the 1.5 million milestone to be reached in February or early March.

Minecraft and Splatoon 2 saw the exact same drop Week on Week, with -23%. Their sales are actually pretty close: 8 588 units for the former, and 7 329 units for the latter. Of course, total sales are nowhere near close, since Splatoon 2 has sold nearly 5 times more than Minecraft (2 910 678 units vs 582 039 units).

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

• 11./08. [NSW] Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Square Enix) – 7.117 / 217.610 (-38%). Both versions combined sold about 12 000 units this week, and 429 000 units LTD
• 12./12. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 6.578 / 1.269.601 (-15%). Sales remain strong nearly 2 years after launch;
• 17./25. [NSW] Fitness Boxing <HOB> (Imagineer) {2018.12.20} (¥5.800) – 4.130 / 19.719. Its sales trajectory is certainly interesting: sales increased by 76% this week, which is extremely unusual so many weeks after launch and during a slow week in January.

This week, for the first time in nearly a year (since the launch of Monster Hunter World and the weeks that followed), the PlayStation 4 outsold the Nintendo Switch… by a couple hundreds of units. A pretty solid performance for the Nintendo Switch given the complete lack of releases (as opposed to the PS4 that received two major games in the same week).

The Nintendo Switch sold 52 429 units during Week 4, which is nearly 20 000 units less than during Week 3. That drop is nothing surprising for a slow week in January, especially since the console did see a similar drop last year. But the difference is that it’s holding better this year, with about 5 000 units more than during Week 4, 2018.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 401 606 units in 2019, as opposed to 273 460 units after the same amount of weeks in 2018. It’s pretty safe to assume 2019 sales will stay ahead of 2018 for a long time. Right now, it’s not clear how the console will fare during Q1, but given this week’s sales, we can safely expect sales to stay in the 40-60 000 units range in the foreseeable future.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales dropped to 4 932 units this week. It sold 5 439 units during Week 3, and 11 313 units during Week 4 2018. Nothing much to say about the handheld this week!
