[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 34, 2018 (August 20th – August 26th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu!

Media Create

Week 34 was the post-Obon week, and as expected, both Software and Hardware sales are down. But one thing that didn’t drop too much is the number of games on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20: there’s 16 of them this week, as opposed to 17 last week.

There weren’t that many releases last week, and only one was on a Nintendo platform: My Hero One’s Justice (on Nintendo Switch). It’s off to a pretty decent start, with roughly 40 000 units sold during the first week, including 24 626 units on Nintendo Switch alone. In comparison, the previous My Hero Academia game, on Nintendo 3DS, sold only 8 828 units at launch and 15 540 units LTD (one might say it wasn’t really hard to do better!).

My Hero One’s Justice should be able to reach 100 000 units LTD, but sales in the upcoming weeks will tell us if we can expect much more than that. The game did suffer from shortages from launch week, so it looks like there’s clear interest in the game so far.

After a brief stop at the top of the Software charts from Media Create, Minecraft is down to #3 with 18 234 units sold (-30%). Of course, the drop is due to the Summer holidays now being over, but make no mistake: it will keep on selling steadily through the rest of the year (and well beyond that). It’s now sold over 230 000 units, and it will reach 250 000 units in early September.

The same can be said for Splatoon 2, which saw a similar drop in sales with 16 036 units sold (-34%). It’s now sold over 2.5 million units, and the next major milestone is 3 million units: it should be reached before the end of the year. As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it sold 13 146 units, also with a similar drop (-35). Of course, it hasn’t sold nearly as many units as Splatoon 2, but 1.7 million units definitely is not something that could be called “shabby” (especially since it’s just going to keep on selling, like all other evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch).

As a family-focused game, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! did see its sales drop now that the Summer holidays are over. It sold 10 829 units this week (-49%), bringing the total a little bit closer to the 200 000 units milestone (it’s currently sitting at 172 849 units). Of course, it’s also going to keep selling through the rest of 2018, but it’s only during weeks with public holidays that sales are going to increase noticeably on a weekly basis.

WarioWare Gold saw an even worse drop in sales, but that was to be expected for a Nintendo 3DS games when the focus is almost entirely on the Nintendo Switch these days. It sold 9 067 additional units this week, bringing the total to 79 410 according to Media Create. It definitely will reach 100 000 units in the upcoming weeks/months, but it doesn’t look like it will be escape its fate as the worst-selling WarioWare game.

As for Mario Tennis Aces, you can definitely add it to the list of games that saw their sales drop following the end of the Summer holidays, but are still going to keep selling through the rest of the year. Media Create reports that it sold 8 832 units this week (-52%), bringing the total to 324 490 units. It should be able to reach 350 000 units by the end of September.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the game that saw the softest drop week on week, with 7 472 units sold (-23%). It’s already guaranteed to reach 1.1 million units at retail alone in a couple of week, and it really doesn’t look like it’s going to drop off the Top 20 from Media Create any time soon at this rate (except maybe during weeks with lots of new releases that sold a decent amount of units).

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

11./08. [NSW] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo) – 6.463 / 108.698 (-47%). It should be able to stay in the Top 20 from Media Create another couple of weeks at least;
12./07. [NSW] Pro Baseball Famista Evolution (Bandai Namco Games) – 5.975 / 77.751 (-55%). Another game impacted by the usual post-Obon drop. Whether it keeps selling through the rest of the year or not will determine how much it ends up selling above the 100 000 units threshold;
13./11. [3DS] Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokémon Co.) – 5.946 / 1.709.657 (-30%). This one is still hanging around in the Top 20 from Media Create, and should stay there a little bit longer;
14./10. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) – 5.372 / 601.576 (-38%). It’s now sold over 600 000 units, and it will be at 700 000 units before you know it. The 1 million units milestone looks more and more in reach as weeks go by;
15./13. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 4.842 / 1.800.721 (-31%). 1.8 million units have been sold since launch, and 2 million units will be reached before the end of the year;
16./12. [NSW] Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) – 4.611 / 188.238 (-42%). Despite the shortages this Summer, it’s managed to sell nearly 200 000 units; it will reach that milestone in September, unless sales really drop too much;
18./15. [3DS] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo) – 3.076 / 42.818 (-47%). It’s not selling as much as the Nintendo Switch version, but it’s still trucking along. It will reach 50 000 units sometime in September, though it will most definitely be out of the Top 20 from Media Create by then…
20./16. [NSW] Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy DX (Level 5) – 2.345 / 17.150 (-54%). Last week in the Top 20 for this game!

Media Create – Hardware

Nintendo Switch sales did drop this week: even the popular console could not avoid the usual post-Obon drop. That being said, the drop is (as expected) rather limited: sales went from 54 647 units to 46 259 units. In other words, it’s back in the 40-50 000 units zone it’s been for a quite while, and it’s probably safe to expect sales will not drop below that in the near future. After all, the evergreen titles are still attracting players to this very day, and the line-up for the rest of the year is pretty packed.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are back to being down Year on Year (on a weekly basis, not YTD). The reason? The release of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (accompanied by its own bundle) boosted sales to ~69 000 units. Not only was there no such release this year, there also was no special bundle or anything, so it’s hardly surprising sales are down this year. Things should go back to normal by next week.

With 4 928 198 units sold as of this week, the Nintendo Switch is getting closer and closer to the 5 million units milestone: it should reach it during Week 36, unless a massive drop / increase in sales happen next week. Naturally, it’s basically guaranteed the console will reach the 6 million units milestone by the end of the year, especially with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the horizon.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it’s back to its pre-holiday levels with 7 797 units sold. Sales are going to keep dropping in the near future, but if the first half of 2018 is any indication, they should not drop too low.
