[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 10, 2017 (March 6 – March 12) [Top 50]

Week 10 is the week that followed the Nintendo Switch launch, and sales are surprisingly good for a console that’s been virtually sold out since the launch week-end. There were some remaining units from the initial shipments, and extremely limited shipments during the week-end, so it was expected that sales would drop sharply during the second week.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild held rather well, with 44 483 units sold. That’s 76% less than during the launch week, which is an expected drop for a second week. But sales could have been worse, what with the Nintendo Switch shortages. It looks like this is still the game most players end up getting with their new console. This new Legend of Zelda game has sold 230 862 units since launch.
The Wii U version had a softer drop: -60%, with 17 482 units sold, and 62 084 units since launch. The main reason the drop was softer is that there was no Wii U shortages to speak of, and launch week sales were lower than for the Nintendo Switch version. Both versions combiend have sold 292 946 units since launch, which means it’s already topped 300 000 units sold as of writing.
1-2-Switch saw a similar drop in sales, with 20 746 units sold during the second week: that’s 74% less than during Week 9. Just like launch week, 1-2-Switch is the second most popular game on the Nintendo Switch, and most likely, it will not change until more games are released.
As for Super Bomberman R, it sold rather decently during its second week: 8 550 untis to be more precise (-77%). Sales should top 50 000 units during Week 11, since they’re currently standing at 45 173 units. Quite interestingly, this is by far the best sales for the series in decades, and since this one was a launch title on a new platform, it could pretty well reach 100 000 units sold.
Next, we have Dragon Quest Heroes I & II, with once again a pretty similar drop to all the other Nintendo Switch games. It sold 7 206 units during its second week (-72%), and 32 812 units since launch. It should be able to reach 50 000 units in the upcoming weeks.
Finally, Puyo Puyo Tetris had a slightly softer drop than other Nintendo Switch titles (but not by much), with 4 469 units sold (-65%). Unfortunately, unless that one sells well in the long run, it will not reach 50 000 units LTD.
Looking at the Top 10, we can see that Pokémon Sun and Moon is back in, with 11 646 units sold. Sales are pretty steady, with only -5% compared to last week. It certainly bodes well for holiday weeks! So far, Pokémon Sun and Moon has sold 3 200 916 units since launch (physical only, excluding the dual-pack).
As for Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional, it’s also holding pretty well, with 9 795 units sold (-27%). Since it’s currently standing at 172 853 units since launch, it should have no trouble reaching 200 000 units in the upcoming weeks (most likely in April).
And here’s how the other games in the rest of the Top 20 are faring:
- 14./16. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 6.009 / 989.876 (-15%). This one keeps selling pretty steadily, and should reach 1 million units before the end of the month;
- 18./18. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 4.558 / 685.797 (-24%). Sales remain steady, but at this rate, it will drop from the Top 20 pretty soon;
- 20./21. [3DS] Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World (Nintendo) – 4.333 / 101.64. This one makes a comeback in the Top 20 this week, and reach 100 000 units at the same time!

As expected, the drop is pretty brutal for the Nintendo Switch, with “only” 61 998 units sold during the second week. As we explained above, the console was virtually sold out at launch at many retailers, and while there were some additional shipments last week, those were limited (and only at select retailers, to boot).
Here’s the second week for various recent consoles (thanks, hiska-kun):

You could argue that 62 000 units sold is surprisingly good given the current stock situation in Japan, but that would not mean much. The Nintendo Switch had the worst second week sales, which also doesn’t mean much at this point (for example, it’s extremely unlikely the Nintendo Switch will end up selling less than the Wii U). As explained last week, it’s way too early to say whether the Nintendo Switch is a success or not.
Unfortunately, there will not be anything interesting on the Nintendo Switch front until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the Golden Week, in late April / early May. Hopefully, Nintendo will have the stock situation under control by then, though it definitely would not be surprising if the Nintendo Switch sells out during the Golden Week.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are pretty steady, which is a good sign given the total lack of (significant or not) releases in the past few weeks. With 23 681 units sold this week, Nintendo’s handheld only sold 3 000 units less than during the same week last year.
As for the Wii U, it dropped below the 500 units/week threshold, with 430 units sold. Naturally, it’s highly unlikely it will get above it ever again.
