[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 37, 2019 (September 9th – 15th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 37, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

There are a few releases in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu this week, but only one of them is on a Nintendo platform: Daemon x Machina, on Nintendo Switch. It’s off to a somewhat decent start, with 28 149 units sold.

That’s nothing amazing, but at the very least, it’s far from a complete flop. The real issue is that most of the sales are bound to be concentrated on the first couple of weeks, as the long-term potential for this kind of (niche) game is almost non-existent. As such, the second week drop is expected to be quite sharp, probably enough to knock the game off the Top 10 Software.

Here’s how the other games in the Top 10 fared this week:

  • 05./03. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 14.512 / 614.809 (-21%). Most evergreen titles saw their sales stay flat this week, except Super Mario Maker 2 for some reason;
  • 07./05. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 10.298 / 3.254.114 (-3%). Sales remain perfectly flat, avoiding the drop below the 10 000 units/threshold;
  • 08./07. [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) – 8.884 / 162.038 (-1%). Demand is still quite strong for this game, despite the end of the holiday season;
  • 09./08. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 8.568 / 2.449.023 (-3%). Came short of the 2.5 million units milestone by less than 1 000 units!
  • 10./09. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.051 / 923.522 (-2%). (Not so) Slowly but surely making its way to the 1 million units milestone.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped once again (- 26 000 units), but as expected, they remain unusually strong given the time period (September really isn’t the best of months for video games sales), and the Nintendo Switch Lite releasing this Friday. Compared to last year, the console is doing pretty well, with 51 619 units sold this week vs. 36 153 units sold during Week 37, 2018.

Naturally, the release of the Nintendo Switch is bound to boost sales in a significant manner, and not just during launch week (when we can expect sales well over 100 000 units), but also beyond (including the upcoming holiday season, in December).

It will certainly be interesting to see which model sells the most in the long run, because so far, Nintendo has succeeded in conveying that each one has its own strengths and value. The fact that sales did not crater following the announcement of the Nintendo Switch Lite, and actually increased significantly when the OG model got a refresh with improved battery life, proves that both the regular and Lite models will coexist on the market.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 2 082 413 units this year, which is almost exactly 400 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (1 682 569 units). Since launch, it has sold 8 971 959 units, which means it will reach the 9 million units milestone next week no matter what (even if Nintendo were to cancel the release of the Nintendo Switch Lite at the last minute).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales actually increased very slightly this week with 1 849 units sold (vs. 1 518 units last week). During the same week last year, it sold 6 338 units. This year alone, the handheld has only sold 161 519 units, as opposed to 427 048 in 2018 after the same amount of weeks. Since launc, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 24 466 483 units LTD.
