[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 30, 2019 (July 22nd – July 28th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 30, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

There was quite a lot of new releases during Week 30, and the biggest one is clearly Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Quite surprisingly, it’s off to a rather disappointing debut, with only 143 130 units sold at retail. Here’s how the previous entries fared:

  • Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest – 353 201 units at launch (581 905 units LTD) [NB: each game is counted separately]
  • Fire Emblem Awakening – 262 399 units at launch (484 521 units LTD)
  • Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia – 133 410 units at launch (215 474 units LTD)

There’s two main reasons to explain this drop:

  • this new game is a bit more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS entries (and the console itself is more expensive)
  • the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers make the digital version extremely attractive. A voucher costs 9980 Yen, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses alone costs 7 538 Yen (with taxes).

There’s clearly a large number of players who ended up getting the digital version as a result (the weekly Nintendo eShop charts are proof of that), though unfortunately, we will have to wait until October (and the latest Nintendo Financials) before getting any data about digital sales in Japan.

The most likely outcome, however, is that even with a much stronger digital sales than past entries, Fire Emblem: Three Houses opened lower than the past two mainline entries on Nintendo 3DS. That being said, the more robust DLC schedule should help sales in the long-term, like what happened with Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

The second entry of the week is Tsuri Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (based on a popular arcade game), which is off to a strong debut with 47 700 units sold during the first few days. Now that the Summer holidays are there for kids, it’s pretty safe to expect sales to remain strong through the next few weeks. It’s not clear where sales will eventually end up, but it should be able to easily get over 100 000 units before the end of August.

As for Rune Factrory 4 Special, it’s off to a pretty good debut with 37 916 units sold. In comparison, the original sold about 88 700 units at launch on Nintendo 3DS, so it’s a positive sign. After all, port and remasters rarely do too well in Japan. Of course, it remains to be seen how much the game will sell in the long run: will it end up reaching 100 000 units LTD (the original ended up over 180 000 units LTD)?

Finally, Tokyo 2020 Olympics: The Official Video Game is off a to rather muted start, with only 9 425 units sold. The PlayStation 4 version did not even chart, which means it sold less than 7 519 units.

There’s several reasons to explain those sales:

  • the Olympics are still a year away. SEGA is quite clearly looking at long-term sales for this game, as seen with the various sports they plan to add in the next few months via free Software updates;
  • Mario & Sonic is coming later this year, and it looks like people are simply waiting for this one instead.

Next, let’s take a look at the other games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu:

  • 03./02. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 37.941 / 418.083 (-18%). It’s now sold over 400 000 units at retail, and will pass the 500 000 units milestone within the next few weeks;
  • 07./08. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 8.088 / 3.175.474 (-8%). Sales remain strong and steady;
  • 09./09. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.849 / 2 380 413 (-1%). Sales are perfectly flat;
  • 10./07. [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) – 7.519 / 122.191 (-17%). It looks poised to keep selling through the holiday seasons, and should eventually hit 200 000 units LTD.

Famitsu – Hardware

Nintendo Switch sales are seemingly stuck in some sort of limbo, not unlike what happened last year during Summer. Sales are not truly bad, but they’re not quite impressive either… they’re just “ok”, which is probably not that much of a surprise given the recent Hardware announcements. Unfortunately, it means we should not expect any impressive increase during the Summer holidays seasons (of course, it’s a different story for Software).

The Nintendo Switch sold 42 689 units this week, which is slightly less than the previous week (45 596 units) and last year during the same week (47 446 units). The release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses does not seem to have had a noticeable impact on sales, most likely because Fire Emblem fans already owned the console.

So far, the console has sold 1 703 487 units this year alone, which is nearly 350 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks. Despite 2019 weekly sales falling behind 2018 sales, the drop is nowhere near enough for 2018 sales to catch up. The Nintendpo Switch has now sold over 8 593 033 units since launch.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales remain perfectly flat with 2 667 units sold, compared to 2 517 units the previous week, and 8 413 units during Week 30 2018. So far, the handheld has sold 140 440 units this year (365 138 units in 2018 after the same amount of weeks), bringing LTD sales to 24 445 404 units.
