[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 28, 2019 (July 8th – July 14th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 28, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

This week, there’s only one entry in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu, and it’s the Nintendo Switch version of God Eater 3. It’s off to a rather mediocre start, with 20 960 units. It’s not really a flop, but it’s also far from great. Of course, this is not all that surprising for a late port, especially as there’s already been so many of those on Nintendo Switch.

In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 133 000 units at launch (and over 260 000 units LTD). Unfortunately, it’s unlikely the Nintendo Switch version will ever reach 100 000 units, unless it keeps selling in the long run.

Here’s how the other games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu are faring:

  • 01./01. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2(Nintendo) – 54.720 / 334.077 (-34%). Summer holidays season hasn’t quite started, but sales remain strong. It has now sold over 300 000 units since launch;
  • 03./03. [NSW] Yo-kai Watch 4: We Are Looking Up at the Same Sky (Level 5) – 12.287 / 222.791 (-37%). Nothing special about sales for this game so far. Summer holidays seasons will be quite telling when it comes to its long-term potential.
  • 04./05. [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) – 11.374 / 105.598 (-39%). Decent sales so far, but nothing really impressive for now. It’s now sold over 100 000 units since launch;
  • 05./07. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 9.136 / 3.158.604 (+2%). The only game that saw its sales increase this week;
  • 06./08. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.687 / 2.364.659 (-6%). Sales remain strong ahead of the Summer holidays season;
  • 07./09. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.141 / 845.060 (-1%). It will reach the 850 000 units milestone next week;
  • 08./04. [NSW] Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle (Koei Tecmo) – 6.759 / 25.886 (-65%). A surprisingly decent second week for this game;
  • 09./11. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 5.715 / 1.577.403 (+0%). It looks like the start of pre-orders for Pokémon Sword and Shield did not really have a negative impact on sales.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, the Nintendo Switch dropped to 55 823 units following the big spike during Week 27. That’s actually better than last year during the same week, when it sold 47 317 units. It looks like, so far, the Nintendo Switch Lite announcement did not have any noticeable impact on sales, but it’s too early to say for sure.

What’s more, the announcement of a new model with greatly improved battery life earlier today is bound to have some sort of impact on sales, though it will be compensated by the 3 000 Yen coupon for the Nintendo eShop (which only comes with the old model, the new one and the Nintendo Switch Lite are excluded).

Nintendo is also going to get rid of all remain stocks of the old model before the new one is released, so it will be interesting to see how this translates into actual sales. Let’s hope that the Nintendo Switch will not run into stock problems in August because Nintendo miscalculated how many units they would need until the new model hit the shelves.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 1 615 202 units this year (as opposed to 1 258 522 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 8 504 748 units since launch.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are flat with 2 361 units sold this week (as opposed to 2 550 units during Week 27, and 7 449 units during Week 28, 2018), 135 526 units LTD (as opposed to 346 173 units after the same amount of weeks in 2018), and 24 440 220 units LTD.
