[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 12, 2020 (March 16 – March 22) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 12, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 12 saw the release of the biggest game of the year (without a doubt) — Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We already commented on its sales in this post, so make sure to check it out if you haven’t already!

Other than that, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch performed as usual. Sales for nearly all games in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu are stable: they’re either slightly up (Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario Party) or slightly down (Pokémon Sword and Shield).

The only games with a bigger drop are Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX with 21 954 units sold (-53%), because it’s a fairly recent release, and Ring Fit Adventure with 7 505 units sold (-14%), once again due to shortages.

While the majority of new Nintendo Switch owners (and there were tons of them this week!) most likely bought Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it looks like many of them also bought another game with it, as evidenced by the strong sales of the many evergreen titles. With Animal Crossing bringing lots of brand new users, it’s pretty safe to expect that sales are going to remain strong in the weeks and months ahead.

Highlights this week include:

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX has now sold over 200 000 units (206 893 units to be precise)
  • there’s now less than 100 000 units separating Pokémon Sword and Shield (3 527 528 units LTD) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (3 612 919 units LTD)

Famitsu – Hardware

As expected, the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons (but also the special Hardware bundle, and a new colour for the Nintendo Switch Lite) had a massive impact on Nintendo Switch sales. That being said, the scope of the impact is quite unexpected: 392 576 units is, quite simply, the best week ever for the Nintendo Switch — even better than launch week, as explained in this post.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle boosted sales of the OG model, which jumped from a measly 11 801 units to 129 473 units… that’s 10 times more! Unfortunately, the bundle is now sold out, and the next shipment is expected to come in Early April, so sales are going to drop off a cliff next week (Week 13).

Thanks to the new colour (Coral), the Nintendo Switch Lite also saw its sales increase dramatically this week with 263 103 units sold, though the jump isn’t quite as impressive (nearly x6 Week on Week). Since the Lite model is still readily available in stores (with sporadic shortages), the drop next week should be more limited than for the OG model, but it should still be quite notable.

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch Lite has sold more units than the OG model, heavily impacted by shortages: 733 419 units vs. 684 372 units. The OG model has now sold over 11 million units (11 022 420 units to be precise), and the Lite model should reach the 2 million units milestone within the next couple of weeks (1 778 802 units as of Week 12).

Next week, sales are most definitely going to drop, but how big the drop is going to be remains to be seen. As mentioned above, the OG model is going to be the most impacted, but even the Lite should see a big drop.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales dropped this week to 1 022 units (vs. 1 362 units last week, and 6 819 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 14 230 units (vs. 81 444 units after the same amount of weeks last year), and 24 510 377 units LTD.
