Japan: Famitsu sales for October 2019 (Software, Hardware, Publishers)

Famitsu have shared their monthly report on video game sales in Japan, this time covering October 2019 (to be more precise, the period going from September 30th to October 27th, so 4 weeks in total).

This month again, the majority of games in the Top 5 Software are new releases. The best-seller is probably one most people were not expecting: Ring Fit Adventure. It sold 132 542 units during the first few days. Wii Fit on Wii sold over 3.5 million units LTD, and grealy contributed to the success of the console in Japan; it will be interesting to see if Ring Fit Adventure can have a similar impact on sales for the Nintendo Switch!

Story of Seasons: Friend of Mineral Town is also off to a good start with 82 688 units sold in just a few days.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for October 2019 from Famitsu:

01./00. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 132.542 / NEW
02./00. [PS4] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare <ACT> (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2019.10.25} (¥7.900) – 117.670 / NEW
03./02. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2019.09.27} (¥7.980) – 109.793 / 412.997 (-64%)
04./00. [NSW] Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town <SLG> (Marvelous) {2019.10.17} (¥5.800) – 82.688 / NEW
05./00. [PS4] Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint # <ACT> (Ubisoft) {2019.10.04} (¥8.400) – 76.380 / NEW

Just like last month, the Nintendo Switch didn’t manage to grab all 5 spots of the Top 5, “only” 3 of them:

NSW – 3
PS4 – 2

And despite sales dropping sharply, Nintendo is still the most successful publisher in Japan with 377 000 units sold. Once again, the games in the Top 5 (only one this month) do not account for the majority of sales, which came mostly from evergreen titles.

Square-Enix is #2 with 189 000 units, mostly due to the strong second month for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition. Finally, Bandai-Namco is #3 despite not even landing a single game in the Top 5. Sales mostly come from Disney Tsum Tsum Festival and the continued sales of Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version.

Nintendo – 377.000
Square Enix – 189.000
Bandai Namco Games – 147.000

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling platform with 269 322 units sold. It’s the 20th month in a row that Nintendo’s console is the best-selling one in Japan, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon. Sales dropped sharply, but that’s because September got a massive boost thanks to the Nintendo Switch Lite, launched during that month.

Speaking of the Nintendo Switch Lite, the OG model is still outselling handily with 175 844 units sold. It might change in November, but it’s more likely that we will have to wait until December to see the Lite model as the best-seller.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS is definitely on its way out, with barely 4 700 units sold this month (vs. 23 676 units in October 2018).
