Famitsu

Top 5 Software

The only Nintendo Switch entry in the Top 10 Software this month is Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island.

The first brand new Shiren the Wanderer entry in nearly 15 years is off to a great start with over 85.000 units sold at retail alone. That’s even better than its predecessor (Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate on Nintendo DS, which sold 63.000 units during the first 4 days).

Retailers underestimated demand, for many of them ended up running out of copies. This explains why, on the digital front, the game ranked #2 in both January and February!

Momotaro Dentetsu World: Chikyuu wa Kibou de Mawatteru! was the best-selling game in January with 153.137 additional units sold, which brings total sales to nearly 950.000 million units.

As for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it starts 2024 on a good footing with 151.569 units sold in January, and over 1.7 million units since launch.

Publishers

Once again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher in Japan with about 618.000 units sold. While they always see a noticeable bump during the holiday season, Nintendo games tend to enjoy strong sales all year long, and January was further proof of that (no release and post-holiday slump, yet sales remained strong).

Konami was the 3rd most successful publisher with 184.000 units sold. Most of those sales come from Momotaro Dentetsu World: Chikyuu wa Kibou de Mawatteru!.

  1. Nintendo: 618.000
  2. SEGA: 224.000
  3. Konami: 184.000

Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales took a bit hit in January (nearly -50% compared to December 2023 and January 2024), and that’s despite the tracking period for this month including the entirety of the New Year holidays. Still, the console remained the best-selling platform with nearly 250.000 units sold across all 3 models.

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 32 million units, and unless sales take a big hit this year, it should end 2024 with over 35 million units sold.

This year, the Nintendo Switch is entering its 8th year on the market (the final one without a successor on the market), and sales are bound to trend downards. However, weekly sales show that the console still has a surprising amount of fuel left in the tank!
