[Japan] Famitsu sales for First Half of 2020 (Software, Hardware)

Famitsu have shared their latest sales report for the Japanese video games market, this time covering the First Half of 2020 (December 30th 2019 to June 28th 2020, so 26 weeks in total).

First, some good news: the market is doing better this year, with both Software and Hardware sales on the rise. Here’s some raw data:

+-------+------------+------------+
| | This H1-CY | Last H1-CY |
+-------+------------+------------+
| H-W | 79.340 | 66.120 |
| S-W | 95.470 | 73.990 |
| TOT | 174.810 | 140.110 |
+-------+------------+------------+

Famitsu points out that this is the best First Half since 2012. Also, this is the first time since 2006 (14 years ago!) that both Hardware and Software sales are up at the same time during that period.

To the surprise of no one, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console during H1 2020, and by a large margin. The console sold no less than 2 666 882 units, which is a lot more than last year during the same period (about x1.8 times). Of course, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the main culprit there, boosting sales to unprecedented levels for that period. Total sales for the Nintendo Switch now stand at 14 050 313 units as of June 30th.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales remain at an extremely low level with only 33 340 units sold during H1 2020 (less than 6 000 units per month). LTD sales now stand at 24 529 487 units.

Software-wise, the best-selling game is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold about 1.4 million units more than all the other games in the Top 10 combined. It sold over 5 million units between March 20th and June 30th, and that’s not counting digital sales (though Download Cards ARE included in that number). Unfortunately, it was the only million-seller during H1 2020, though Final Fantasy VII Remake did come quite close to that milestone.

The Top 10 Software is, unsurprisingly, dominated by the usual evergreen titles we see week after week in the weekly charts. As far as new entries go, there’s only one of them on Nintendo Switch (besides Animal Crossing: New Horizons), and it’s Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. It sold 260 802 units between March 6th and June 30th, which is a fairly solid for a remake.
