Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy) isn’t a fan of sequels

Just like movies, series or even books, (direct) sequels have become pretty common in video games, but it’s not a trend Hironobu Sakaguchi (the creator of Final Fantasy, who also worked on The Last Story for the Wii) is really fond of. In fact, he hates sequels. That’s the reason why each new Final Fantasy game got a brand new cast, new gameplay systems and a new story.

Ever since his days at Squaresoft, Hironobu Sakaguchi has always had the following philosophy: with every single game, creators have to give their all, so that when the game’s done, there’s nothing left for a possible sequel. One can make a comparison with Masahiro Sakurai, who always work on each Super Smash Bros. game as if it was going to be the last one.
