Nintendo: construction of Technology Development Center formally announced, to be completed in March 2029
These past few years, Nintendo has been steadily expanding. The company has been hiring pretty much non-stop, but also acquiring companies (like Next Level Games or SRD), establishing new subsidiaries (like Nintendo Pictures), expanding in more regions (like Singapore and Thailand), and more. And back in 2022, Nintendo acquired land from the City of Kyoto in order to build a new development center. Until today, that building was known as “Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2 (tentative name)” (quite the mouthful!), and today, the company announced its official name: Technology Development Center.
This new building will serve as a new research and development base for research and development, with office space for developers. But that’s not all: it will also have everything needed for future research and development, including development servers. And the construction of the building is just the beginning: Nintendo will keep on investing in the center in the future.
Nintendo currently estimates that the construction of the Technology Development Center will cost 121 billion Yen (around 750 million dollars based on today’s exchange rate). Its construction is expected to be completed sometime in March 2029.
Here’s what the Technology Development Center is expected to look like:

Finally, here’s the press release in full:
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, “Nintendo” hereafter) hereby announces the following information regarding the Technology Development Center (*1), which is currently under construction on the land (*2) acquired from the City of Kyoto in 2022.
*1 The building was previously referred to as the “Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2 (tentative name)”.
*2 This refers to the land (the former Startup Support Factory site, and the former western site of the Materials and Disaster Prevention Center) for which the City of Kyoto invited proposals through a public proposal process beginning on December 8, 2021, to select an operator for its effective utilization. Nintendo was selected as the operator on April 12, 2022, and subsequently acquired the land.
The Technology Development Center will serve as a new research and development base for Nintendo’s software and hardware. In addition to office space for developers, the facility will have the functions and infrastructure required for future research and development, including development servers, and Nintendo plans to continue investing in the center.
Through the construction of the Technology Development Center and further investment in research and development, Nintendo will continue to create more reasons for consumers to choose Nintendo for unique, family-friendly entertainment, while striving to deliver Nintendo’s unique and original entertainment to everyone around the world.
