[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 24, 2019 (June 10th – June 16th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 24, 2019 in Japan.

The only new game in the Top 10 from Famitsu is Doraemon Story of Seasons, which is off to a rather decent debut with 42 230 units. For the Doraemon series, it’s no less than the best debut since the very first entry on Famicom. For the Story of Seasons (ex-Harvest Moon), it’s far from the best-selling entry at launch, but comparing a spin-off with mainline entries isn’t exactly fair. Its debut is on par with the previous spin-off: Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale (44 000 units at launch).

The real test will be sales in the mid to long term. Story of Seasons games generally tend to sell well in the long run, and it’s not clear whether Doraemon Story of Seasons will follow the same sales trajectory just yet.

This week, the Nintendo Switch nearly had the full Top 10 Software from Famitsu to itself. Here’s how the various games sold:

• 02./02. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 10.058 / 3.121.997 (+16%). It looks like the announcements at E3 2019 didn’t go unnoticed!
• 03./03. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.334 / 815.819 (+1%). Minecraft doesn’t really need E3 to sell;
• 04./04. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo)- 7.765 / 2.333.923 (-4%). Interest in Mario Kart remains strong more than 2 years after its launch;
• 05./06. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 6.027 / 1.553.472 (-2%). The Pokémon Company have started promotion Pokémon Sword and Shield in earnest, but it doesn’t seem to have any negative impact on this entry at all;
• 06./09. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.598 / 1.338.167 (+29%). It looks like Nintendo announcing a sequel at E3 2019 had a positive impact on sales, though it remains to be seen how long this will last. The game has been selling steadily since launch, and it’s unlikely things will changein the near future;
• 07./07. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 5.099 / 3.089.159 (-7%). Business as usual for the Inklings and Octolings;
• 08./08. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 4.371 / 634.665 (-3%). If you’re wondering whether Super Mario Maker 2 will have a negative impact on the sales of this game, the answer so far is clearly “No”;
• 09./12. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 3.501 / 1.042.537 (+1%). Japanese players are still in the mood for party, it seems!

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slightly up with 34 321 units sold (as opposed to 33 590 units during Week 23). If the announcements at E3 2019 had any impact on sales, said impact was seemingly neutralised by the announcement of a special promotion for the Nintendo Switch (starting June 27th, all Nintendo Switch consoles will come with a 3 000 Yen coupon to use on the Nintendo Switch).

Unfortunately, sales are still down Year on Year: the console sold 44 824 during the same week in 2018. It’s pretty clear by now that this will not change until Super Mario Maker 2 launches, on June 28th. Fortunately, the release of that game should provide a big enough boost to compensate for the minor drops Year on Year of the past few weeks.

Besides, those drops are nothing too worrying, especially given how slow the whole market has been since April. What’s more, the drops are not all that big: YTD sales are at 1 395 656 units as of this week, as opposed to 1 070 129 units last year. Even if Super Mario Maker 2 was to have literally no impact on sales whatsoever, it would take a little while for 2018 sales to catch up.

Finally, the console has now sold 8 285 202 units LTD. It’s pretty safe to expect the Nintendo Switch will reach 9 million units LTD sometime this Summer.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are perfectly flat with 2 768 units sold, as opposed to 2 732 units last week and 7 321 units during the same week last year. The drop Year on Year is quite noticeable, with only 125 270 units sold so far in 2019 (vs. 316 447 units in 2018). The Nintendo 3DS has now sold over 24 430 234 units.
