Sonic Mania: opening animation, Competition Mode, soundtrack sample

As the release of Sonic Mania is drawing ever nearer (it’s tomorrow!), SEGA isn’t quite done revealing new content for it. As a matter of fact, a brand new game mode was revealed last week: Competition Mode. As the name implies, it’s a mode for players looking for some competitive fun in Sonic Mania.

In this mode, you can choose to play as one of three characters: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. The winner is determined by the following factors:

  • clear time
  • score
  • number of items acquired
  • number of rings acquired (when clearing the level)

What’s more, players can adjust the rules of each match by adjusting the items found in the item box, or the number of rounds.

Here’s a trailer showcasing the Competition Mode in Sonic Mania:

Also, SEGA has revealed the full opening animation for the game, Animated and Directed by Tyson Hesse,  andfeaturing custom music by Hyper Potions:

But wait, there’s still more… Here’s the latest soundtrack sample, this time for the Mini Boss!

Finally, here’s the latest video from the official Sonic the Hedgehog channel on YouTube, with an unboxing of the Collector’s Edition:

Sonic Mania (Switch – eShop) comes out on August 15th in Europe and North America, and August 16th in Japan.
