Nintendo Switch: over 1 million units sold in Japan (Famitsu), Top 5 Software

Last week, Dengeki reported that the Nintendo Switch had finally sold over 1 million units in Japan, 16 weeks after launch. And today, it’s Famitsu’s turn to announce that sales for the latest Nintendo console have topped 1 million units, 17 weeks after launch (they have lower sales for the platform than Dengeki). And later today, it’s Media Create who will announce the same thing.

To be more precise, as of Week 25, 2017; the console has sold 1 016 473 units. Famitsu points out that by reaching 1 million units sold in 17 weeks, the Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling home console in Japan in recent history (since the Wii, actually).

The Top 5 Software is anything but surprising, especially if you’ve been following the weekly sales data reports from Media Create. The best-seller is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 501 614 units: the only game to have sold over 500 000 units so far. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn’t too far behind, with 460 480 units sold. Both games have a near 50% attach-rate, which is pretty impressive.

Next, we have 1-2-Switch at #3, with 200 807 units. It’s not been selling nearly as much as the two others (especially since the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), but its sales have been rather steady overall. As for ARMS, it manages to end at #4 with only two weeks tracked, and 32 000 units during the second week (it debuted at 122 000 units, and is now at 154 845 units).

Finally, we have one lone third-party game at #5: Super Bomberman R, with almost 100 000 units sold so far (92 112 to be preicse).

For the most part, third-party offerings on Nintendo Switch have been rather weak on the Nintendo Switch (late ports and/or niche titles), so it’s not too surprising that sales would also be weak. Hopefully, things will improve in the upcoming months, as successful third-parties is a must have for the console to be truly successful.

With the release of popular titles this Summer (such as Splatoon 2 and Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver.), and the increased shipments announced by Nintendo last week, Famitsu sales expect further growth in the near future.
