UK: Software and Hardware sales for October 2016
In its latest issue, MCV magazine provides some sales data for the video games market in the United Kingdom, for October 2016. And we start with some good news: the market was much more healthy last month (as opposed to the same month last year), with 2,382,463 units sold (+40.76%) / £88m in value (+46.18%). Last year, it was 1,692,614 units / £60.2m… that’s quite the increase for October 2016!
Here’s data for each week:
- Week 40, 2016 – 531,266 units / £20m (581,418 units / £21.9m in October 2015)
- Week 41, 2016 – 537,230 units / £21m (369,581 units / £12.9m in October 2015)
- Week 42, 2016 – 605,162 units / £22m (307,453 units / £10.1m in October 2015)
- Week 43, 2016 – 708,805 units / £25m (434,162 units / £15.3m in October 2015)
Unfortunately, that’s all for the good news. Sales may have increased sharply in October 2016, there’s still down Year on Year for 2016 as a whole: 13,845,533 units (-11.19%) / £453.9m (-8.15%).
Looking at Software sales, we see that Nintendo platforms were more or less irrelevant:
01 (01) PlayStation 4 – 1,114,993 (46.8%) / £43,328,000 (48.1%)
02 (02) Xbox One – 957,750 (40.2%) / £37,664,000 (42.8%)
03 (03) Xbox 360 – 92,916 (3.9%) / £2,464,000 (2.8%)
04 (04) Nintendo 3DS – 73,856 (3.1%) / £1,760,000 (2%)
05 (05) PlayStation 3 – 52,414 (2.2%) / £1,408,000 (1.6%)
06 (06) Nintendo Wii U – 40,502 (1.7%) / £1,056,000 (1.2%)
07 (07) PC Software – 38,119 (1.6%) / £1,056,000 (1.2%)
08 (08) PlayStation Vita – 7,147 (0.3%) / £176,000 (0.2%)
09 (09) Nintendo Wii – 4,765 (0.2%) / £88,000 (0.1%)
10 (10) Nintendo DS – 2,382 (0.1%)
Also, there isn’t a single game on a Nintendo platform in the Top 10 for Software, even when taking into account multiplatform titles:
15 (NE) SKYLANDERS IMAGINATORS (ACTIVISION BLIZZARD)
37 (NE) PAPER MARIO: COLOR SPLASH (NINTENDO)
Finally, Hardware sales. Unfortunately, no data is provided for the Nintendo 3DS. As for the Wii U, it only sold 3,500 units in October 2016…
