Shin Megami Tensei IV Final: the developers want to make the n°1 RPG on 3DS

Earlier today, we already got the very first details about the characters and the story of Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, thanks to the usual leaks from Famitsu. But it looks like more has leaked online, including part of the interview with the Producer (Kazuyuki Yamai), in which he explains how the development for this game started.

Shin Megami Tensei IV FinalIt all began when the team members were wondering what to do for a Maniax-like release for Shin Megami Tensei IV. They realised they had to make a completely new title, and that’s how development started. For this game, the developpers really wanted to make “everything clear”, which is why they put “Final” in the title.

The game has two main “themes”:

  • the necessary “reality”, that shows mankind in a “limited” state;
  • the story, told in an ambiguous way (since the game is said to be rather “simple”, gameplay-wise). The players will wonder whether they should bond with others, or kill them all.

As for Navarre, Kazuyuki Yamai didn’t explain his rather peculiar appearance in the game, but told Famitsu that they really wanted to see him again. They expect he will be able to “expand” on the drama, which is why they brought him back.

Later in the interview, Kazuyuki Yamai mentioned feedback for the original Shin Megami Tensei IV, and confirmed that they improved on everything they could in the game (including conversing with demons). They took a close look at the feedback, and then went on to improve every little detail in order to make the best game possible.

In fact, the developers want to make Shin Megami Tensei IV Final the best RPG on Nintendo 3DS, that even players who are yet to play the original Shin Megami Tensei IV will be able to enjoy. That’s quite a lofty goal!

Shin Megami Tensei IV Final (3DS) will come out on February 10th in Japan.
