Nintendo Switch: 10 million units sold worldwide

The Nintendo Switch was released back in March, and since then, it’s been selling at fast pace… too fast for Nintendo, who is not able to meet demand (especially in Japan, though the situation isn’t any better in most of Europe and in North America). And last week, the console reached yet another milestone.

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that total worldwide sales for the Nintendo Switch have already topped 10 million units (as of December 10th). The last time we got an update, it was back in October, when Nintendo announced that the console had sold 7.63 million units sold. That was for March 3rd to September 30th, which means the console sold 2.7 million units between October 1st and December 10th.

In comparison, the Wii U sold 13.56 million worldwide… throughout its entire lifetime. In other words, the Nintendo Switch is pretty likely to outsell its ill-fated predecessor within the first calendar year (not even the first year proper).

Obviously, this was the bare minimum for the console: outselling the Wii U, even in such a short amount of time, isn’t the most outstanding of achievements. It’s especially important for Nintendo that the Nintendo Switch sells a lot, because there’s only one console to rely on from now on (unless Nintendo surprises everyone by releasing a new handheld).

It’s also crucial for Software: first-party games and attracting third-party publishers.

In the press release, Nintendo mentions that it will “ship more units than ever before” in December in Japan, “so that even more consumers can purchase and enjoy Nintendo Switch”. No doubt both Europe and North America will see a similar increase in shipments.
