***Minecraft BattleLast month, the Wii U version of Minecraft received a major update, adding the Super Mario Mash-Up pack. But it looks like players will not have time to catch their breath, as another update is slated for next month. It will add a battle mini-game called “Battle”, a “last-minecrafter-standing deathmatch” mode. It’s actually the first of a series of mini-games coming to the console versions of Minecraft.

The goal of those mini-games is to allow players to have fun right away, without having to set up anything like manual countdowns, loot chests, or score keeping. Of course, nothing prevents you from making your own games, with your own rules, like many have done in the past.

In Battle, players are pit against one another in a fight for survival (can’t be more straightforward than this!). To win, you have to race to get weapons and loot from chests, while avoiding the obstacles on the way.

It was designed especially for console players, and more precisely couch multiplayer fans. It’s also meant to be accessible and fast-paced, so the focus is on rapid tactical thinking and combat. In Battle, there’s no need for crafting, and looting + equiping armour is done with the tap of a button. If you fall in battle, you will spawn back as a bat, so you can go annoy your opponents by fluttering near them.

You can play:

  • locally, with up to 4 players in splitscreen;
  • online, with up to 8 players.

To play, you can either use the in-game matchmaking system, or invite other players.

Battle will be added to Minecraft next month, as part of a Software update. It will come with three arenas for free, but additional map packs will be released later down the line ($2.99 each).

Finally, here’s some screenshots and a trailer for the Battle mini-game:
