[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 52, 2020 (December 21 – December 27) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 52, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 52)

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! was the best-selling game during Christmas Week in Japan. It sold over 267 000 units (+28% compared to Week 51), and really cemented its position as #1 holiday title in Japan (beating even the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons).

It’s now sold over 1.2 million units at retail alone, and there’s little doubt it will end up selling well over 2 million units LTD. Konami really hit the jackpot with this family-friendly board game, taking advantage of the lack of major Nintendo title for the holiday season but also of the new audience brought in by Animal Crossing: New Horizons throughout the year.

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales saw a further increase during Christmas week with over 278 000 units sold (up from 263 304 units during Week 51). The lack of new major Nintendo title(s) for the holiday season did hold back sales, but the impact was more limited than expected.

Year on Year, the increase is quite significant with +44 000 units sold this year (234 268 units for the same week in 2019). The main reason behind that increase is the fact that Christmas was on a Friday. The days just before Christmas generally see the highest volume of sales in a given year, and this year, Week 52 had 4 such days.

Sadly, the Nintendo Switch will not reach 6 million units YTD, due to Famitsu going with a 52 weeks year (instead of 53, as should have been the case). Still, the console had its best year with no less than 5 957 000 units sold, with is nearly 1.5 million units more than 2019, the previous peak year.

2020 is therefore the new peak year for the Nintendo Switch, but that’s not really a surprise: total sales for 2020 had already surpassed total 2019 sales several weeks ago. As of writing, it does seem unlikely that 2021 will be able to do better, but of course, it’s still too early to say for sure. After all, nobody could have predicted that Animal Crossing: New Horizons would blow up the way it did last year, carrying sales throughout the year.

It’s clear Nintendo have not played all their cards yet (we’re still to see a price drop, or the infamous new more powerful model we’ve heard ramblings about for months now), and we still know (almost) nothing of Nintendo’s plans for 2021. One thing we can say for sure is that the Nintendo Switch is going to keep enjoying strong and steady sales throughout the year, unusually so for a console about to enter its 4th year on the market.

Week 1 is also poised to be a big week for the Nintendo Switch, thanks to New Year and its traditional otoshidama.
