[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 33, 2021 (August 09 – August 15) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 33, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 33)

Due to Obon, Week 33 was a rather busy week for the video games market in Japan despite the lack of new releases.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel: Saikyou Battle Royale!! did manage to grab the top spot (which wasn’t really hard) with nearly 100 000 units sold at retail alone (96 297 units sold). This is by far the best debut for the Yu-Gi-Oh! series in quite a while: you have to go back all the way to 2002 to find a Yu-Gi-Oh! game selling more at launch (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 7: The Sacred Cards on GameBoy Advance with 128 343 units sold at launch, and 238 112 units LTD).

This is the first retail release for the Yu-Gi-Oh! series since Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal World Duel Carnival nearly 8 years ago. It enjoyed strong pre-orders thanks to the pre-order bonus (a set of exclusive TCG cards). Unfortunately, that means that sales are highly likely to drop like a rock during the second week, as a large number of players seem to have been more interested by the cards than the game itself (pre-orders really quieted down after the initial rush).

Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel: Saikyou Battle Royale!! isn’t going to sell much in the long-run, but there’s no doubt it will end up as much profitable venture for Konami!

Thanks to Obon, the various evergreen titles have all seen a big jump in sales. Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! even saw its sales double week on week (+101%) with 21 974 units sold (which brings total sales to 2 322 950 units).

The only games that did not see an increase in sales are The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Crayon Shin-chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi, due to them being recent titles. That being sales, their sales did remain stable (-3% each), which shows that they did benefit from the Obon boost.

Sadly, no specific milestones this week, but a few titles are approaching one (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is nearing 4 million units sold, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is nearing 250 000 units sold for example).

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales did see a noticeable increase in sales with 89 732 units sold (up from 72 773 units last week). The increase is concentrated on the OG model, which saw its sales jump from 60 260 units to 75 546 units (to be compared to the much more modest increase for the Lite model, which sold barely 2 000 units more).

Unfortunately, that’s still nowhere near what the console sold during the same period last year. During Week 33 in 2020, Nintendo managed to sell no less than 148 699 units of its console, with Obon providing a much more significant boost to sales. As mentioned several times before, 2020 vs 2021 sales comparisons were bound to lean in favour of 2020.

Unless the OLED model greatly overperforms, Nintendo Switch sales are bound to stick to their current trajectory during the next few months, and it’s more than likely that 2021 will see a drop in Year on Year sales. During the past few weeks, said gap has gone from well over 300 000 units to barely 50 000 units this week (3 514 449 for 2021 sales so far, vs. 3 462 081 units last year).

This week, the Nintendo Switch hit yet another milestone: the Lite model has now sold over 4 million units. The OG model has been outselling it consistently this past couple of years (with the exception of launch month and periods with severe shortages impacting the OG model), which is why it’s hardly a surprise that it has now sold 4 times more (16 845 143 units to be precise).

LTD sales for the Nintendo Switch stands at 20 854 823 units sold. Sales should hit 21 million units before the end of September, even when taking into the usual post-Obon drop.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales increased to 539 units this week (up from 323 units last week, but 1 173 units last year), which brings YTD sales to 19 518 units (down from 19 518 units last year) and LTD sales to 24 578 426 units.
